Job Description


We are seeking an Intern Year Round \- R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with experienced researchers on embedded systems projects
+ Contribute by designing embedded systems and programming microcontrollers
+ Design printed circuit boards
+ Build and test prototype embedded systems
+ Support projects with software programming or electronics design, build, and testing


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Earned Bachelor of Science degree in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Technology and currently working toward a Master of Science or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
+ Proficiency in the C programming language
+ Previous experience with embedded system or microcontroller programming
+ Basic understanding of digital electronics
+ Able to work independently, think creatively, and solve problems


+ Familiarity with ARM processors
+ Previous printed circuit board design and layout experience
+ Previous experience with serial communications \(e\.g\., SPI, I2C, and RS\-232\)
+ Previous soldering experience
+ Knowledge of hardware and software debugging

Department Description:

The Global Monitoring & Verification Research and Development Department \(6831\) researches, develops, evaluates and fields technologies for Sandia's Global Security and Cooperation Center for monitoring nuclear material and warheads to enable effective monitoring and verification of treaties and agreements\. We conduct technology R&D and technical collaborations in the areas of warhead and materials monitoring and treaty/agreement verification and transparency

Our diverse work includes technical development for radiation detection, sensors, tags, seals, information management and protection, and other nuclear security elements, typically with ultra\-low\-power requirements\. This organization provides the research, development, testing and evaluation for advanced technologies and modern material management systems for global applications\. The technologies and systems we develop provide technical insights to policy makers\. Our programs are collaboratively linked to other efforts in the Global Security Center 6800 and require engagement across Sandia, with other laboratories, and the international community\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
