The Graduate Intern Pipeline Program is geared toward graduate students who are currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD degree program\. The goal of the program is to create a pipeline of highly qualified interns interested in a career with Sandia upon graduation\. The ideal candidate will have a strong desire for a summer internship that may potentially lead to full\-time employment after graduation\.

We are seeking an Intern \- National Security Analyst R&D Graduate Summer / Pipeline

You will join our multidisciplinary team of systems analysts informing strategies, priorities, and requirements for technology solutions in complex, multi\-domain problems relevant to national security\. You will:

+ Apply critical thinking using a diverse set of skills and expertise
+ Communicate options, insights, and trade\-offs to stakeholders in a concise, data\-driven way to enable action
+ Provide technical insight into problems in various national security domains to enable connectivity between operational organizations and Sandia’s research and development teams

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Formally define problems, develop requirements, and propose technical approaches using analytical methods
+ Develop and evaluate requirements for technologies and/or countermeasures across multiple national security domains
+ Inform decisions and responsive actions to mitigate effects to infrastructure and operations
+ Design and deploy tools and software that model system performance and behavior
+ Elicit customer needs and propose solutions
+ Present results as appropriate at conferences or internal meetings


+ Expertise in one or more of the following: design and analysis of complex systems, decision analysis, risk analysis, international security and policy, expert elicitation, facilitation, communications with non\-technical audiences, data analytics, machine learning, optimization, and operational or policy guidance development
+ Experience working in the energy, cybersecurity, chemical, biological, counter\-terrorism, radiological or nuclear security domain
+ Evidence of professional service and leadership to the community, such as service on program committees, workshop organization, and/or editorial or review work
+ A proven ability to frame and tackle complex and/or ill\-defined multidisciplinary problems
+ Background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real\-world data, especially large data sets

Department Description:

The Systems Research & Analysis Department is part of a five\-department System Analysis and Engineering Group in the Homeland Security and Defense Systems Center\. Work in our department is focused on a broad range of topics in national security including nuclear weapons, homeland security, and transportation energy\. Nuclear weapons work includes stockpile studies, surety systems analysis, cost estimation, and future stockpile planning\. Homeland security work includes analyses, simulations, and prototype technology deployments which address defense against biological, nuclear, chemical, and radiological terrorism; planning and training for disaster management; and emerging cybersecurity threats\. Transportation energy analyses enable technology, policy and regulatory decisions focused on vehicle fleet composition and fuel alternatives\. In these complex problem areas, staff combine technical depth, cross\-domain breadth, and multiple analytic disciplines to deliver products that inform decision makers and facilitate evaluation of options and tradeoffs\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned Bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full\-time in a Master's or Ph\.D in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, economics, or public policy\-relevent discipline
+ Minimum GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ US citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position\.

Additional Requirements:

+ Evidence of relevant research expertise in the form of technical publications, presentations, software, and/or knowledge of applications
+ Experience presenting information to audiences in formal and in\-formal settings
+ Must be eligible for and maintain eligibility for a DOE Q\-Level clearance
