Job Description

:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join a dynamic, best\-in\-class research team conducting leading\-edge materials innovation, analytical and synthetic chemistry, and related materials science at the Advanced Materials Laboratory \(AML\)\. Do you have a strong interest for synthetic and/or radiological materials chemistry research? If so, you will want to consider applying for this opportunity\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Conduct independent or collaborative research related to: inorganic precursors, ceramic nanomaterials, radiological materials, surface functionalization, and single crystal growth and analyses
+ Assist with maintenance of laboratory instrumentation
+ Engage in communal efforts between diverse groups within the department
+ Perform all work in compliance with applicable safety and security requirements

Required:

+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in organic, inorganic, solid\-state, or materials chemistry
+ Experience publishing and/or presenting research results
+ Ability to obtain a DOE security clearance

Desired:

+ Established high level ES&H work habits
+ Ability to relate complex analytical information to general populace with established outreach programs
+ Familiarity working with cross\-cutting disciplines including nanomaterials functionalization, mass flow, and radiological materials
+ Experience building positive relationships with students, technologist, customers, and technical staff
+ Single crystal growth of materials using solid\-state or solution techniques
+ Structural solutions of single crystal X\-ray studies to publication status
+ Experience with theory and practical use of handling of air sensitive materials \(Glovebox and Schlenk line manipulations\)
+ Experience in nanomaterials synthesis with an emphasis on solution routes
+ Experience in materials \(chemical, physical, morphological\) at the angstrom to bulk length scales and inorganic molecule characterization
+ Experience with materials characterization using X\-ray based analytical tools \(i\.e\., powder X\-ray, single crystal structure solution, X\-ray fluorescence\)
+ Familiarity with ICP, magnetic, luminescent, Raman, Thermal Analysis, electron microscopy, and electronic materials characterization

Department Description:

The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities\. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano\-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal\-particle “inks” and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self\-assembly of nanoparticles in 2\- and 3\-dimensions\. Processing research and development includes: providing a “Direct Write” capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates; electrospinning of fibers of vastly different compositions; and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments\. Our customers include all of Sandia’s mission areas and numerous external collaborators\. The AML is a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico\. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local high schools, community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States\. Additionally, we are able to collaborate with a variety of world\-class scientists who may not be U\.S\. citizens\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
