Job Description


This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to assist in the development and application of advanced multi\-physics modeling and simulation capabilities for a wide variety of applied engineering problems\. Are you passionate about will working within and adding to the capabilities of a large finite element method code? Do you dream of using your code to develop creative solutions to unusual and meaningful problems? If so, you will want to apply for this opportunity\.

Current research areas include, but are not limited to:

+ Thermal\-electrical\-mechanical simulations of photovoltaic module durability and reliability
+ Thermal\-mechanical simulations of heat exchangers
+ Ablation and performance of composite materials for thermal protection systems
+ Thermal\-electrochemical\-mechanical simulations of energy storage materials for batteries
+ Application of machine learning and automatic meshing for converting 3D imaging \(CT scans\) to finite element meshes
+ Verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification for the above applications

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Research and develop mathematical models for complex coupled multi\-physics applications
+ Research and develop computational algorithms for efficiently coupling and solving multiple sets of physics within one simulation
+ Implement mathematical models and algorithms into an existing finite element code base
+ Apply computer codes on high performance computing \(HPC\) scales to tackle challenging engineering problems
+ Work within a team to accomplish project goals
+ Communicate results of research in the form of journal publications, technical reports, scientific conference presentations, and customer presentations


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related engineering or natural science field
+ Experience with multi\-physics computational modeling, simulation, and numerical discretization techniques
+ Experience with the Linux operating system
+ Experience with a high\-level programming language such as FORTRAN, C, or C\+\+


+ Experience with Matlab, Python, scripting languages and grid generation software
+ Experience with photovoltaic modules, battery materials, composite materials, or modeling based on 3D image data
+ Experienced with advanced codes \(CFD, FEA, etc\.\) on massively parallel computing clusters
+ Experience with code and solution verification for systems of partial differential equations
+ Software development experience, including working with development teams using object\-oriented frameworks
+ Experience with scientific and engineering methods and with discipline's standards for the ethical conduct of research
+ Strong communication and teaming skills to build positive relationships with team members with diverse technical backgrounds

Department Description:

The Thermal/Fluid Component Sciences Department provides a wide range of fluid modeling and analysis, and experimental discovery and validation support in discipline areas such as: incompressible flow, porous flow, reactive flow, multiphase flow, thermal/fluid coupling, suspensions, plasma physics, and rarefied gas dynamics\. The department supports activities spanning the entire research\-design\-analysis spectrum, from creating fundamental physical models, to developing computational algorithms and codes, to applying these models and codes to solve fluid and plasma problems in a wide range of applications\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
