We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Applied Photonic Microsystems Department with an emphasis in silicon photonics technologies\.

On any given day, you may be asked to:

+ Perform focused research in silicon photonics in simulation, design, and experimental characterization of devices
+ Perform small\-scale packaging of silicon photonics devices, sometimes co\-packaged with electronic chips
+ Suggest and implement improvements in device characterization techniques, device design, packaging, and fabrication techniques
+ Report research results in top\-tier journals and conferences
+ Generate new intellectual property through patent filing as applicable

Required:

+ You have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Science, Physics, or other related STEM technical area conferred within five years prior to employment
+ You possess experience in the design and test of optical systems, optical materials or devices, or photonics microsystems
+ Your background includes experience in developing or using software for device performance simulations using, for example, Comsol, Matlab/Simulink, FDTD codes etc\.
+ You have experience performing original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publications in top\-tier journals, and conference papers and presentations
+ You can obtain a DOE Q security clearance

Desired:

Ideally, your background would also include:

+ Demonstrated expertise in integrated photonics \(in particular, silicon photonics\) simulation, design, and testing
+ Experience in high speed characterization of devices, electrical probe stations, operation of high speed and high frequency test equipment, such as bit error rate test equipment, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and high\-speed oscilloscopes\. Additional experience automating characterization experiments is a plus
+ Experience interfacing electrical components to optical microsystems; examples are modulator drivers, transimpedance amplifiers, and electronic control circuits
+ Knowledge of semiconductor physics, optical materials, nonlinear optics, and/or related topics
+ Ability and desire to work in a team environment and flexibility to work on multiple projects concurrently
+ Active L or Q Clearance

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.
