Job Description


We are seeking R&D engineers, scientists, computer scientists, and/or cyber security experts that are passionate about their work and want to see their research have direct impact on the security of our country\. You would join our dynamic, multi\-disciplinary team in the Energy Security Department to work on cutting edge national security problems related to critical infrastructures and you would be able to utilize state\-of\-the\-art equipment and facilities to explore creative solutions\. Additionally, as part of Sandia’s much larger cyber community you will be exposed to many technology areas related to all areas of cyber and you could be instrumental in helping tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation's security\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead research in secure control system architectures related to nuclear power systems and other critical infrastructures;
+ Utilize cutting edge modeling and simulation tools and infrastructure to explore cyber related questions related to these systems;
+ Develop new tools to incorporate into our modeling and simulation environment;
+ Perform innovative and creative research on malware that have been obtained from real systems;
+ Tackle risk related research to help make energy systems resilient to threats \(man\-made or naturally occurring\);
+ Work with other Sandia cyber organizations to help solve their critical cyber topics;
+ Support the management team in building a research roadmap in these areas;
+ Collaborate with other national labs and universities in these areas;
+ Travel internationally to support an international cyber standard;
+ Engage with our customers to help define the challenges and build our program;
+ Work with other Sandia cyber organizations to support training nationally or internationally\.


+ Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline; or higher degree \(Master's or PhD\) in a relevant discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
+ Knowledge or experience in High\-Level Programming such as C, Python, or other equivalent programming language;
+ Experience working with digital systems;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ Experience working with digital control systems in a national critical infrastructure;
+ Experience with digital control system architectural design;
+ Demonstrated experience with virtualization;
+ Minimum of 2 years working directly with government customers;
+ Proven understanding of control system vulnerabilities and mitigation techniques;
+ Active DOE security clearance;
+ Technical cybersecurity expertise with a demonstrable understanding of malware techniques, tactics, and practices;
+ Demonstrated ability to publish technical reports as evidenced in peer reviewed publications or conferences\.

Department Description:

The Energy Security Department conducts applied cyber research and development on technologies to better secure our energy critical infrastructures and minimize our threat from cyber enabled nuclear proliferation\. In addition to these two areas, we support other cyber organizations within the labs to help enable their missions\. Our department focuses on fully understanding the cyber risk to a critical infrastructure and developing tools to help mitigate those risks\. This is done through our three main research thrusts: cyber risk management \(including supply chain\), secure architectures, and modeling and simulation\. Our team performs research and development to solve questions such as what cyber risk is this infrastructure exposed to? What would a more secure control architecture look like? How would I model this environment to explore our potential solutions? Example of systems we look at would includebe nuclear power plant instrumentation and control systems, pipeline control systems, other energy systems, and non\-proliferation technology\. Our customers include multiple government sponsors such as the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, National Nuclear Security Administration, and other federal entities\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
