Job Description

:

We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to join a diverse team supporting research activities led by scientists and engineers in an unique laboratory setting\. The team activities involve the design, construction, testing and operation of systems and technologies used to evaluate the properties of materials in high\-pressure gaseous hydrogen\. Systems include aspects such as gas\-handling, low\- and high\-pressure environments, mechanical and electrical apparatuses, sensors and controls, and data acquisition\.

On any given day, you may be called on to work independently or with other members of the work force to:

+ Design, fabricate, and modify low\- and high\-pressure gas\-handling systems
+ Conduct mechanical testing of materials exposed to high\-pressure hydrogen, including developing procedures, analyzing results and preparing documentation on test results and conclusions
+ Design and construct fixtures and test specimens
+ Design, craft and test mechanical and electrical devices that support scientific experiments
+ Develop instrumentation, electronics and software controls
+ Maintain hydraulically\-driven mechanical testing equipment
+ Develop safety documentation and maintain a safe working environment
+ Collaborate with people outside the department, such as environmental safety & health experts, facilities engineers, machine shop staff and external vendors

Your work will consist of providing laboratory support for focused, full\-time projects of limited duration or multiple concurrent projects that compose your full schedule\. It is expected that you can accommodate either type of workload\. You are expected to have good interpersonal skills and to work both independently as well as within a team environment\.

Required:

+ You have an associate degree in a STEM discipline \(e\.g\. mechanical engineering, materials science\) OR equivalent work experience
+ You have experience with development, construction and/or maintenance of laboratory equipment
+ You have the ability to obtain a U\.S\. Department of Energy Q security clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with pressure, vacuum, cryogenic and hydraulic systems
+ Experience with data acquisition systems, computer control systems or transducer electronics
+ Basic machining skills \(e\.g\. experience with lathes, milling machines, EDMs\)
+ Understanding of instrumentation used in mechanical testing \(e\.g\., thermocouples, strain gauges\)
+ Experience with power tools
+ Strong computer skills, including experience with data analysis and computer\-aided design and drafting \(e\.g\. experience with SolidWorks, Python, MATLAB\)
+ Strong written and communication skills
+ Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline \(e\.g\. mechanical engineering, materials science\) OR equivalent work experience

Department Description:

The Hydrogen and Materials Science Department provides expertise to both Sandia and the Nation on the interaction of hydrogen \(and its isotopes\) with all types of materials\. The Department performs scientific and engineering research to develop fundamental understanding on the aging of materials in gaseous environments, including hydrogen, and applies this understanding to determine its effects on the performance and reliability of materials relevant to Sandia’s nuclear weapons and energy missions\. Department staff conducts research and development primarily for two important customers: 1\) Gas Transfer Systems \(GTS\) for the Nation's Nuclear Weapons Enterprise; and 2\) the Fuel Cell Technologies Office \(FCTO\), part of DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy\. The Department’s work covers a broad range of areas, including analyzing hydrogen’s long\-term impact on materials used in fuel cell and gas transfer systems, developing solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, assessing the suitability of materials for hydrogen storage, advising hydrogen safety codes and standards, maintaining and enhancing nationally recognized core and enabling capabilities in hydrogen science, and initiating hydrogen storage and fuel cell market transformation strategies to bring technological advancements towards broad\-based commercial availability\.T

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
