Job Description

:

We are seeking a highly qualified graduate student pursuing relevant degrees in engineering and related fields with research interests in experimental structural dynamics, acoustics, solid mechanics, or additionally nondestructive evaluation to support ongoing programs during the summer of 2019\. Students that will have completed at least one year of study in pursuit of a Master’s or Ph\.D\. degree are preferred\. Successful candidates will work closely with staff members in a laboratory environment\. Students will be challenged to conduct both independent and group work, to mentor undergraduate interns, and to periodically present their work to staff and management\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist staff members in structural dynamics, vibration, acoustics, shock or solid mechanics testing
+ Process data or script processes using various software systems, including MatLab, Python, LabView, SolidWorks, etc\.
+ Research current state of the art in these fields utilizing scientific literature
+ Plan and design experiments, write reports in PowerPoint or Word

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Desired:

+ Pursuing a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science or closely related field
+ Prior experience in experimental structural dynamics, acoustics, solid mechanics, or additionally nondestructive evaluation
+ GPA greater than 3\.5/4\.0

Department Description:

The Experimental Solid Mechanics and Structural Dynamics Group, 01520, within the Engineering Sciences Center, 01500, simulates normal, abnormal, and hostile mechanical environments\. Tailored and controlled tests are used to accurately characterize the structural response of small and large\-scale systems\. The work includes integration with environments engineering, advanced diagnostics, and computational analysis\. This integrated capability supports applied and fundamental laboratory research and model validation, develops experimental methods and integrated environments, and characterizes the behavior of hardware within operational environments\. Responsibilities span the research, development, qualification, and acceptance phases of a broad range of national security missions\. These include the nuclear weapons deterrent, satellite assets, missile defense, conventional military technologies, infrastructure and energy security, and other applications\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
