Job Description

:

We are seeking an Intern \- Materials Chemistry R&D Undergraduate Year Round\.

The year round intern will be trained in several analytical instruments, including thermal conductivity equipment \(Hot Disk\), thermogravimetric analysis\-differential scanning calorimetry \(TGA\-DSC\), electrometers and inductance, capacitance and resistance \(LCR\) meter\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist with the characterization of thermophysical properties and electrical performance of diverse kinds of materials
+ Perform material characterization work which may include thermal conductivity, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and dielectric constant, among others
+ Work with various scientific instruments, data collection, data processing and the ability to maintain a safe laboratory working environment
+ Organize and prioritize samples, run instrumentation to evaluate the material properties of the samples, maintain a laboratory notebook, analyze the data, present results and provide written documentation

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

**Additional Requirements**

+ Pursuing a science or engineering major such as chemistry, material science, chemical engineering or related field
+ Familiarity with Microsoft Office

+ Experience in chemistry laboratories
+ Experience using analytical instruments
+ Experience presenting results and writing reports

Department Description:

The Materials Chemistry Department is a group of Chemists, Material Scientists, and Chemical Engineers who actively supports the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by providing materials expertise to SNL's non\-nuclear components\. We use our understanding of chemical properties to design, evaluate and exploit monomers, polymers and functional materials\. Our core competencies span foams, composites, adhesives, plastics, surface finishing and electrochemical deposition\. We have the facilities for materials characterization, design prototyping and WR processing\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
