Job Description

:

We are seeking an R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to support research and development projects related to nanostructured and nanoporous materials\. Are you a hard\-working, flexible and self\-motivated technologist who flourishes in a dynamic multidisciplinary team environment? If so, consider applying for this opportunity to contribute to the development of creative solutions that address challenging US Energy and National Security needs\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support lab needs related to magnetic materials modeling and characterization \(i\.e\., magnetometer, B\-H analyzer, and LCR meter, electron microscopy\) and thin film R&D processes \(i\.e\., thin film deposition and characterization\)
+ Utilize interpersonal and multi\-tasking skills for efficiently meeting diverse needs
+ Augment staff research efforts, make self\-motivated lab experimental/modeling contributions, and be a careful partner in safe, coordinated lab operations
+ Develop skills for supporting the maintenance and operation of key materials characterization and processing techniques
+ Work with staff towards safely improvising creative lab solutions that further extend our experimental research capabilities

Required:

+ Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering materials science or another relevant technical field
+ Experience modeling magnetic materials phenomena using COMSOL or other similar modeling package
+ Academic background or experience with interfacing lab equipment to data acquisition systems, and/or handling data for modeling and interpretation
+ Academic background or experience utilizing instrumentation to measure and observe magnetic materials properties or phenomena \(i\.e\., magnetometer, B\-H analyzer, and LCR meter\)
+ Academic background or experience with thin film materials synthesis or characterization techniques
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE L clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with desktop computers and common relevant software \(like MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc\.\)
+ Experience in the operation or maintenance of relevant materials characterization instrumentation \(i\.e\., magnetometer, B\-H analyzer, and LCR meter, electron microscopy\)
+ Experience with general laboratory support
+ Experience in the operation or maintenance of relevant vacuum and/or laser materials processing instrumentation
+ Internship experience in materials science
+ Current, active DoE clearance

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative leading\-edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions\. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer\-reviewed, high\-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings\. Our main research focus is directed along three thrusts:

+ Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications \(including energy storage and corrosion\)
+ Magnetic, Dielectric and Electronic Materials Science and Applications \(including ferroics and composites\)
+ Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications \(i\.e\., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis\)

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
