Job Description

:

We are seeking a Year\-Round Student with the ability to work on site at SNL\-NM several times a week during regular business hours\. Mechanical design skills are desired to support experiments and general technical activities\. Training will be expected to enable operation of laboratory equipment, e\.g\., microscopes and 3D printers\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist with 3D printing components
+ Perform property tests
+ Perform data collection
+ Evaluate and analyze data
+ Enter property data for additively manufactured metals

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Current undergraduate student \(Sophomore or Junior\) in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field
+ Completed coursework including basic chemistry and basic physics, laboratory courses, and intro to engineering
+ Experience with data collection and using spreadsheets \(i\.e\. Excel\)
+ Knowledge of Laboratory Safety

Desired:

+ Experience working in a research laboratory
+ Knowledge of Microsoft Office and MatLab
+ Experience with a CAD/CAM program \(Solidworks or other\)
+ Ability to work in a team and utilize strong communication skills

Department Description:

The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories\. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation\. Thin film properties can also be characterized\. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional \(flame, plasma, twin\-wire arc, HVOF\) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low\-pressure plasma spray\. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso\-scale devices, electrical discharge machining \(EDM\), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro\-metrology, as well as technical consulting\. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write \(aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing\) and metal additive \(powder bed and LENS\)\. Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems\-based engineering solutions\.
