Job Description


We are seeking a Mechanical Technologist

We are looking for an early to midcareer R&D Mechanical Technologist to develop engineering solutions for the SafeGuards Transporter \(SGT\) and the next generation Mobile Guardian Transporter \(MGT\)\. Qualified applicants will work on teams designing, analyzing, fabricating prototypes, testing and producing component and system level hardware for the existing SGT fleet and the MGT currently under development\. The selected applicants will have opportunities to impact development of a critical national asset and experience complete product life cycle, from concept development to final product definition and production\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Collaborate with teams on the development of a mechanical component or assembly to meet defined requirements
+ Support a team designing a component or assembly using the latest CAD tools
+ Ensure that your design meets criteria for manufacturability
+ Research the use of commercially available parts
+ Oversee the fabrication of prototype designs
+ Interface your designs to electrical or electromechanical systems
+ Ensure that your design meet overall SGT or MGT requirements
+ Participate in peer reviews of your design or of other designs
+ Manage schedules for your design


+ Associates degree in mechanical design technology or a closely related engineering field;
+ Proficiency in CAD systems \(CREO, preferred, or SolidWorks\);
+ Experience on mechanical engineering design, qualification, production, or modeling/simulation projects;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ BS in mechanical engineering or related discipline;
+ Experience with electrical cabling interconnecting electronic modules
+ Experience designing for manufacturability;
+ Experience working with manufacturing liaison to get parts fabricated
+ Knowledgeable about advanced welding processes and methodologies;
+ Knowledgeable about sheet metal design and fabrication processes Experience in automotive engineering;
+ Experience in heavy equipment operations and maintenance;
+ Experience with additive manufacturing techniques and processes;

Department Description:

The Mechanical Systems and Design Department is responsible for mechanical design of the MGT and for sustaining all technical aspects of the SGT fleet\. Both the MGT and the SGT projects are high\-visibility, multi\-year efforts which go from concept development to fielded product in support of national security missions\. Our engineers have access to the latest CAD and ASC \(Advanced Simulation and Computing\) tools for developing and analyzing their designs\. They also have the opportunity to participate in extensive field tests up through full scale models\. Our technologists can perform detailed design definition and are experienced with fabrication of mechanical components\. We have the capabilities to prototype, assemble and instrument scaled models as well as full scale components and systems in our well\-equipped high\-bay lab space\. Our team routinely uses 3D printers and 3D lasers scanners in their work

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
