Job Description


We are seeking a qualified technical staff member for a great opportunity to join the Advanced Munitions and Mechanical Systems Department as a R&D Mechanical Engineer supporting systems level aero\-mechanical design, development and field operations\. The successful candidate will need to be self\-directed, highly self\-motivated, innovative, organized, and possess well\-developed interpersonal communications skills\. The work is very fast\-paced and involves extensive interactions with other Sandia organizations, DoD, NNSA, other outside agencies and private industry\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform systems level mechanical design and analyses\.
+ Assemble and test components, sub\-systems and full\-up payloads and/or flight vehicles\.
+ Support ground and flight test fielding operations\.
+ Work in a team environment and provide team leadership and project management\.
+ Assume responsibilities for sub\-system and/or system level design, analyses, testing and integration\.
+ Work with the component developers and system engineers to develop environmental specifications and compatibility definitions in support of system development and qualification\.
+ Work with teams in assembly and test, including the writing of work, planning and control documents\.
+ Prepare and present the work at requisite technical interchanges, program reviews and customer meetings
+ Interact with management and partners, both internally and externally\.


+ BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering or combination in a closely related engineering discipline\.
+ Experience in conducting mechanical engineering analyses and utilizing a range of mechanical engineering tools \(e\.g\. Solidworks, Creo, Sierra/SM\)\.
+ Knowledge and/or experience with Additive Manufacturing in designs and/or hardware fabrication\.
+ Active US DOE Q security clearance\.


+ Experience in mechanical and/or aerospace system design, development testing, and/or assembly of payloads/flight vehicles
+ Experience in qualification environments testing \(e\.g\. shock and vibe, mass properties, thermal, etc\.\)\.
+ Strong desire and/or experience in hands\-on assembly and integration of payloads, flight systems and/or rocket/missile systems\.
+ Excellent communication and people skills working both as a team lead and as a team member\.
+ Outstanding Safety and Security track record
+ Familiarity with the integration of flight electronics and data collection systems\.
+ Experience in Work Planning & Controls implementation
+ Some experience in project management, systems engineering, risk management, quality management, and/or production engineering\.
+ Familiarity or experience interacting directly with MDA, DoD, NNSA and/or Other Federal Agencies\.
+ Familiarity with the NW Product Realization Process
+ Ability to travel

Department Description:

The Advanced Munitions and Mechanical Systems Department \(Org 5414\) at Sandia National Laboratories provides innovative mechanical system solutions and technical leadership to deliver advanced, leading\-edge military systems in rapid development\. We provide a critical core mechanical engineering competency to a broad range of prototype hypersonic flight vehicles, missile and rocket system payloads, and advanced munitions supporting our strike and defense programs\. In addition, we lead the design, integration, assembly, qualification and delivery of numerous flight vehicles in support of the B61\-12 LEP\.
