Job Description


The Advanced Materials Laboratory \(AML\) within the Materials, Physics, and Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories seeks a qualified technologist candidate to support research and development in the field of additive manufacturing and related processing of particulate inks and slurries for a variety of national security customers\. The position will focus on printing materials formulation and characterization and the development and operation of printing processes for existing and new applications using the many printing platforms at the AML \(e\.g\. direct write, photopolymer lithography, etc\.\)\. This work will be highly multi\-disciplinary requiring the successful candidate to be engaged in different types of solo and collaborative laboratory work, andhave a willingness to contribute to a wide number of projects and work effectively in a dynamic research environment as a team member\.

Key functions of this role include;

+ Nano\-material ink synthesis and characterization \(rheology, wetting properties, particle size/distribution\),Digital printing design and operation using direct write \(extrusion, aerosol ink\-jet, etc\.\)
+ Print materials quality/microstructure characterization
+ Process metrology


+ High School diploma or equivalent
+ Demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas is required: additive manufacturing, rheological characterization, CNC systems and motion platforms or drying and solidification\.


+ Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or from a related engineering or science program\.
+ Familiarity or experience with a broad range of microstructure characterization techniques \(optical and electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, x\-ray characterization, etc\.,\)
+ Experience with ink\-jet, direct write, gravure, and flexographic additive manufacturing systems
+ Experience in rheological characterization of colloidal inks
+ Experience or familiarity with motion platforms and printing machine design

Department Description:

The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities\.Current activities and capabilities include synthesis of new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, different processing routes to integrating nano\-scale particles and thin films and printed structures, characterization \(dispersions, rheology\) of metal\-particle "inks" and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self\-assembly of nanoparticles in 2\- and 3\-dimensions\. Processing research and development activities include a "Direct Write" capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, gravure and flexographic printing techniques for electronics and related applications, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments\.The majority of our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico\. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local high schools, community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States\. Additionally, we are able to collaborate with a variety of world\-class scientists that may not be U\.S\. citizens\.
