Job Description

:

An opening exists for a Functional Test Engineering Support Technologist to develop and execute energetic diagnostic production and experimental activities in the Explosive Components Facility in Area II\. The successful candidate will play an active role in the development and execution of Ferro\-electric neutron generator and active ceramic component functional testing to support routine production, shelf\-life, surveillance and development activities for multiple weapon programs\. Activities will involve the handling, assembly, and testing of neutron generator subassemblies and active ceramic functional test units with explosive timer assemblies and qualification drivers\. For all work, rigorous implementation of work planning and control processes are expected to assure safe, secure, and high\-quality operations\. The technologist will provide daily status updates to assigned Process Engineer\. The position's duties require collaboration with a team of experienced functional test technologists, the Process Engineer and Product Engineer to consistently meet and strive to exceed customer expectations\. The Tester Technologist will team with area Process Engineer in the execution of principle responsibilities to ensure that quality and the design intent are always met\.

For all work, the Engineering Support Technologist is responsible for managing the resolution of unscheduled production stoppages, assuring effectiveness of existing processes with respect to safety, quality, cost, and schedule as well as strategic research, development and implementation of new processes and equipment in conjunction with Product and Process Engineers\. Individual is responsible for managing new technology, process development and qualification and authoring initial work instructions/ operating procedures and/or providing guidance/direction to other functional test technologists and serve as a process consultant to assist in the daily operations of the production floor\. Manage and propose continuous process improvement \(CPI\) initiatives to improve value stream level metrics, including span time, yields, process capability and on\-time delivery\. These project efforts are highly collaborative and team\-oriented in nature\. We have a strong Department commitment to Lean Six Sigma as a continuous improvement methodology to improve value stream level metrics, including span time, yields, process capability and on\-time delivery\. There is a strong commitment to high rigor with respect to ES&H and Security\. Part of the duties associated with this position could involve leadership of or support for Department and Center Lean Six Sigma activities\.

Required:

+ Associate’s degree and/or a Bachelor’s in a science or engineering discipline
+ Laboratory experience with test equipment and in the handling of chemicals and/or materials processing
+ Active/Current DOE Q\-level security clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with high consequence safety operations, including explosive and radioactive related processes\.
+ Experience with the formal quality requirements required for weapons production and/or high consequence ES&H operations
+ Experience with Lean Six Sigma, preferably demonstrated by Green Belt certification
+ Knowledge of or experience with manufacturing processes; able to learn processes quickly, identify critical processing parameters and identify requirements for any measurements or in\-process parameters to be monitored
+ Familiar with neutron generator technologies
+ Experience with modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes; knowledge of or experience in statistics
+ Strong organizational skills for the recording of experimental data and the detailed documentation of processes
+ Ability to operate and interpret results from measurement, conditioning and test equipment
+ Motivated to learn new process technologies/techniques and to understand qualification of product and process
+ Willingness to actively participate in Lean Six Sigma program
+ Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and interface with other teams
+ A commitment to a culture of safety and security

Department Description:

The Ferro\-electric Neutron Generator \(FENG\) Test and Final Assembly Value Stream Organization 025662 is in the Product Delivery Value Stream Group of the Responsive Neutron Generator Product Deployment Center\. The department is responsible for the assembly and testing of neutron generators and explosive components\. The department’s responsibilities include the following: Integrated planning for product realization of neutron generator assembly; performing final assembly, inspection, Department of Transportation packaging, and pre\-acceptance activities; coordinating environmental conditioning of diagnostic neutron generator units; executing the instrumentation, functional test and evaluation of neutron generator diagnostic and active ceramic functional test units\. The department supports development, qualification, surveillance and continuous production to assure a safe, secure and reliable nuclear weapons stockpile\.
