Job Description


Sandia has research and development \(R&D\) openings in reliable predictive modeling and simulation with applications to nuclear weapons, energy, cyber, climate and other national scale issues\. Our R&D staff tackles challenging research problems that lead to fundamental advances in large\-scale modeling and simulation for Sandia's customers and sponsors\. Research areas include uncertainty quantification, machine learning, infrastructure resilience, domain decomposition, time parallelism, reduced order modeling, data analytics, a posteriori model refinement, numerical optimization, and high\-performance computing with applications to large\-scale models\. Much of the work is conducted in interdisciplinary teams, including interactions with other departments within Sandia as well as external collaborators\. Researchers will be encouraged to publish and present results in leading peer\-reviewed journals and conferences as well as to develop algorithms and software\.


+ Requires a bachelor’s and master’s degree in relevant STEM discipline plus two or more years experience; or a Ph\.D\. degree in computational and mathematical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related engineering or science discipline;
+ Strong familiarity with software and computing platforms including some or all of the following: JAVA, Unix, C\+\+, Git, high\-performance computing;


+ Expertise in computer modeling and simulation analysis, resilience, statistics;
+ Strong academic performance;
+ Demonstrated ability to team in an interdisciplinary R&D environment;
+ Demonstrated ability to acquire, prepare, and characterize real\-world data for subsequent analysis;
+ Demonstrated research community leadership through activities such as participation in student or professional organizations, service on committees, workshop and/or conference organization, and editorial roles\.

Department Description:

The Computer Sciences Group at Sandia National Laboratories/CA conducts research, development, and systems engineering in computer science and engineering to address important national security problems\. Staff members work in multi\-disciplinary teams and apply their expertise and software engineering skills to a wide range of applications for customers including the Departments of Energy, Defense, and Homeland Security\. Staff members also regularly engage with external customers and sponsors\.

The group does extensive software research, development, and deployment of:

+ Scientific Computing: algorithms and software tools that enable modeling and simulation to play a major role in engineering design, certification, and manufacturing
+ Knowledge Environments: Distributed tools and visualization technologies that enable secure scientific, engineering, or analysis collaborations
+ High Performance Computing: networking, storage, and load balancing technologies
+ Decision Support: tools and technologies to support decision making in complex national security mission areas, including game\-based training environments for crisis responders, simulation of social networked systems \(including formation and evolution\), and system\-of\-systems modeling of catastrophic events
+ Data Analysis: algorithms and tools for supporting exploration, triage, analysis, and visualization of heterogeneous data
+ Enabling technologies: algorithms for optimization \(including under uncertainty\), PDEs, solution of large\-scale systems of equations, and uncertainty quantification
+ Network Traffic Analysis: algorithms and tools to detect and prevent unauthorized actions on networks

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
