:

We are seeking an R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to work on mechanical property testing of brittle materials \(glass, ceramics, and glass\-to\-metal seals\)\. Duties also include general lab support for brittle materials labs and testing equipment\. Testing includes thermo\-mechanical analysis, operation of hydraulic load frames, and optical microscopy\. The work is in a modern laboratory facility that is well equipped with state\-of\-the\-art equipment including contact\-angle\-measurement furnace and other furnaces, dilatometers, DMA, TMA, scanning electron and other microscopes, various indenters, Raman spectrometers, and digital image correlation equipment\. The institution possesses virtually all relevant material characterization equipment\.

Instead of routine technician's work, this job provides varying research tasks and challenges including:

+ Perform mechanical testing and data collection on a variety brittle materials using standard or exploratory methods
+ Determine equipment requirements, set up equipment, perform tests and experiments, or prepare and analyze results
+ Operate and maintain experimental equipment, perform experiments, maintain a safe environment, and make, record, and document observations
+ Design experiments around failed parts to determine cause of failure

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance\.

The Materials Mechanics And Tribology Department provides solutions to problems involving mechanical properties of materials\. The Department’s work ranges from cutting\-edge science to quick diagnostics and design for high\-consequence hardware\.

The department has world\-class expertise in characterizing mechanical properties such as elasticity, plasticity, fracture, friction, wear, lubrication and electrical contacts\. The department supports mainly Nuclear Weapons program customers, but also customers in other areas including satellites, defense systems, energy, and other programs\.

Currently the department’s Brittle Mechanics Laboratory has high work load in materials structures, properties, variability, performance and reliability\. Staff and technologists are highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems\-based engineering solutions\. The technologist’s work involves state\-of\-the\-art equipment and requires creativity, focused thinking, and good teamwork\.
