Job Description

:

We are seeking an Intern \- Lab Support Technical High School Summer

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Provide laboratory support for electronics or mechanical fabrication
+ Assist the team with setting up a new lab space, organizing tools and components, and perform tasks related to cable, electronics, or mechanical fabrication
+ Learn skills and techniques used in the lab environment

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Attending a local high school or living with a parent or legal guardian near the work site if under 18 years of age
+ Enrolled full time, as defined by the school
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ Minimum 16 years of age
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ High school level coursework with math and science courses
+ Ability to maintain detailed records in a notebook and on a computer
+ Demonstrated proficiency in basic hand tools
+ Ability to follow protocols and a willingness to ask questions whenever necessary

Desired:

+ High school STEM classes
+ Strong communication skills
+ Interest in laboratory work

Department Description:

The Advanced Systems Engineering and Deployment Department \(8645\) is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying engineered solutions to fundamental national security challenges in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats\. The department is a multi\-disciplinary organization comprised primarily of mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineers engaging in science\-based engineering and component development to support a broad range of research and development activities\. The projects within 8125 often involve teaming with other groups with expertise in molecular biology, synthetic chemistry, radiation physics, and nuclear weapons to develop prototypes and impact how researchers study fundamental phenomena or turn basic scientific understanding into functional capabilities\. Principal sponsors for the efforts led by the department include the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, and Energy; and various other federal, state and local agencies\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
