Job Description

:

We are seeking a creative, motivated summer intern who is interested in the fields of computer science, computer vision, and image processing and supporting the challenge of developing and implementing unique computer vision and imaging analytics solutions for a wide variety of tests carried out in challenging environments, including explosive, fireball, underwater, rocket sled track, and cable pull\-down tests\. You should enjoy working in both the laboratory and field and have strong technical analysis skills\.

In this role, you will work with a high performing and cohesive team including electrical, systems, mechanical, and optical engineers\. Our work includes measurement R&D, electrical design, systems engineering, optical measurements, data collection, and data analysis\. Tests are carried out at Sandia and occasionally at off\-site facilities, and range from large\-scale experiments that may involve months of planning and preparation to smaller tests that are often completed in a matter of days\. We use systems engineering principles and processes to ensure we deliver high quality and safe engineering solutions for high consequence tests of national importance\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Interface with photometrics and instrumentation teams
+ Help technologists and technical staff to set\-up/disassemble field test assemblies
+ Assist with data acquisition and data analysis \(photometrics and/or instrumentation\)
+ Perform equipment maintenance, including calibration, tracking, and re\-stocking after tests
+ Maintain lab safety practices and paperwork
+ Assist with department and project record keeping

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Strong understanding of photography, basic optics, lenses, and lighting design
+ A basic knowledge of electronics and troubleshooting techniques
+ Familiarity with test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and delay generators
+ Familiarity with timing and synchronization equipment such as GPS receivers, timecode, and IRIG generators
+ Familiarity with networking equipment such as Ethernet switches and fiber optic media convertors

Desired:

+ Experience with Phantom high\-speed cameras
+ Experience with optical measurement technologies such as digital image correlation, thermography/radiometry
+ Education and experience with concepts such as timing, triggering systems, lighting and lenses such as those used for video production and DLSR photography
+ Experience in outdoor field test environment
+ Experience working photo and video editing software
+ Proficiency with basic electrical/electronics assembly skills, soldering, and troubleshooting both at the system and component level
+ Basic ability in reading optical, electrical and mechanical drawings

The Measurement Science & Engineering department \(1535\) is a multi\-disciplinary group that participates in large and small\-scale transient event lab and field testing for systems of national importance\. Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
