Job Description

:

We are seeking a Lab Support Technologist to perform and support experimental activities, research on phase contrast imaging with x\-rays, and laboratory operations in the Non\-Destructive Environments and Diagnostics Department\. The individual is expected to work with staff members from a variety of departments on the integration of a 3D tomography capability including hardware, communication interfaces, data acquisition, image reconstruction, data visualization and data analysis\. There will be additional hands\-on activities to acquire datasets on conventional CT machines exploring scan parameters and how these effect metrology and conducting other laboratory experiments for non\-destructive testing activities\. Our department is part of the Engineering Sciences Center, which is the steward of engineering mechanics for Sandia National Laboratories\. Our department specializes in experimental technologies related to non\-destructive evaluation and testing using x\-rays\. With our state of the art experimental technologies, technical expertise, and analytical capabilities in sister departments, we provide integrated customer solutions\. Our mission is to support fundamental research, development, model validation, qualification and acceptance for nuclear weapons, satellites, national missile defense, and other applications\.

A key responsibility of the job opening is to set\-up and collect 3D image data using conventional computed tomography and tomosynthesis techniques and develop data visualization techniques for the interpretation of 3D datasets\. The applicant preferably has experience with computed tomography, phase contrast imaging with x\-rays, Python, and data visualization\.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

+ Conduct a wide array of experiments in areas of nondestructive evaluation x\-ray or similar discipline to assist scientists and engineers to support current mission areas and help develop test capabilities for future needs
+ Develop new experimental processes, utilizes novel analytical techniques, establishes new characterization methods, and optimizes existing techniques\.
+ Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses for experimental, theoretical, and practical applications of science and technology
+ Support and conduct component and system level testing to support all Sandia programs as required, including nuclear weapons, non\-proliferation, and a variety of work for other customers
+ Work collaboratively with staff and other technologists on many challenging and innovative projects to perform and support quality mechanical testing for customers, identify and implement both technical and operational laboratory improvements, and contribute to research projects
+ Install, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment including instrumentation and data acquisition systems and software
+ Implement and adhere to rigorous work planning and control processes to assure safe, secure, and high\-quality operations

Required:

+ Associate’s degree in a technical field or 2 years of equivalent laboratory work experience
+ Experience with basic laboratory test equipment, including data acquisition equipment, and instrumentation
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-clearance

Desired:

+ Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
+ Experience with radiography testing equipment, test setup, and data acquisition systems
+ Experience with mathematical modeling and computer simulation
+ Experience with data visualization
+ Exposure to coding in Python and Matlab
+ Experience with work instructions and laboratory operating procedures
+ Experience with work planning and controls processes
+ Experience with high consequence safety operations, including explosive and radioactive related processes
+ Ability to interpret, organize, and document experimental results
+ Ability to work effectively in a close team environment
+ Experience with computer aided drafting for test fixture design
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
+ Active DOE Q clearance
+ GPA >3\.5

The Non\-Destructive Environments & Diagnostics Department \(1529\) consists of radiography, nondestructive evaluation \(NDE\), climate simulation for normal, abnormal, and aging environments, and inertial environments\. Deliverables span the full Research\-Development\-Application spectrum for all of the Laboratories¿ Missions with a focus on Nuclear Weapon components throughout the stockpile lifecycle\.
