Job Description

:

We are seeking an Intern Year Round \- R&D Grad

Accelerating Arctic coastal erosion rates \(now approaching 20 m/yr at erosional hotspots\) have placed existing military detection and early warning infrastructure and multiple Alaska communities at imminent risk of destruction\. This project will deliver a field\-validated predictive model of thermo\-abrasive erosion for the permafrost Arctic coastline\. In the thermo\-abrasive process, the parent material at the base of the bluff is warmed by the ocean and eroded by the mechanical action of the ocean during storm events\. The event\-based projections will provide a quantitative tool for guiding military and civil infrastructure investments\.

The individual will contribute to the experiment design and execution module of the project\. They will join the team in defining the most appropriate data collection and analysis to facilitate validation of the event driven model\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead structure for motion data analysis of the permafrost bluff faces at Drew Point
+ Develop automated algorithms to process visual imagery into georeferenced quantitative measurements
+ Evaluate spatiotemporal patterns of permafrost bluff erosion and niche formation
+ Potentially conduct field work along Arctic coastline
+ Develop searchable databases and resource repositories of permafrost characteristics along the northern AK coastline
+ Communicate research findings through written reports and presentations

General knowledge in one or more of the following areas will provide a strong foundation to conduct this work: experiment design and execution, geology, physics, remote sensing, working in Arctic regions, and data analytics\.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ General knowledge in more than one of the following areas is needed to conduct this work: geology, physics, remote sensing, data analysis, and data analytics
+ Experience leading structure for motion data analysis of the permafrost coastlines
+ Experience working in the Arctic
+ Currently located in Alaska
+ Experience in developing algorithms to process visual imagery into georeferenced quantitative measurements
+ Ability to define and investigate complex problems and formulate solution options
+ Strong oral and written communication skills

Desired:

+ Experience developing automated algorithms to process visual data into georeferenced quantitative measurements
+ Ability and desire to come up to speed quickly in new areas
+ Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment
+ Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary analysis teams

Within 150, active research to understand accelerating coastal erosion rates in the Arctic is underway; this internship will support this research\.

The Arctic Coastal Erosion team encompasses multiple expertise to enable modeling and validation of event driven thermo\-abrasive erosion along the Arctic coastline\. Four main modules define the expertise: oceanography, thermodynamics, structural dynamics, and experiment design & execution\. The team works across these disciplines to enhance each of the respective modules with input from the others\.
