Job Description

:

We are seeking an Intern \- Lab Assistant R&D Undergraduate Summer

The position will involve working with and under the direction of technologists and scientific staff\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist in the preparation of metallographic samples and the operation of associated equipment
+ Work on the assembly and maintenance of some equipment is anticipated in the performance of normal duties such as cutting, grinding, polishing, chemical processing, and imaging\.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position\.

Additional Requirements:

+ Pursuing a science or engineering major such as chemistry, material science, or related
+ Must have completed at least one chemistry classroom and laboratory course

Desired:

+ Experience using basic optical microscopes
+ Experience in a chemical processing, materials science, or mechanics laboratory
+ Demonstrated ability to handle chemical solutions of acids and bases in a laboratory environment

Department Description:

The Energy Nanomaterials Department is a research organization specializing in the synthesis and characterization of materials for energy and national security applications\. The department partners with other materials science and engineering organizations within Sandia and many external institutions, including researchers interested in the detailed characterization of materials\. The Metallography & Microscopy Team supports a broad set of large analytical equipment critical to the operations of the California site \(SEM, FIB/SEM and TEM\) and also provides metallographic services to a diverse set of customers\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
