Job Description


We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform entry\-level work within a technical science and engineering environment working in conjunction with Sandia staff on interdisciplinary projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment—which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses about the uses and deployment of advanced technologies in support of US nonproliferation and nuclear security goals
+ Conduct policy\-related analyses in support of national and regional security programs
+ Support efforts to develop project risk/decision analysis models
+ Work with visiting foreign scholars to introduce them to technologies that support implementation of security treaties and agreements
+ Conduct research and analysis on countries and strategic commodities of programmatic interest
+ Apply analysis of international affairs, principles of foreign relations, and scientific and engineering principles in analysis of advanced concepts and technologies for nonproliferation, nuclear security, nuclear safeguards, and international export control regimes
+ Use advanced research methods
+ Perform critical thinking activities
+ Synthesize and analyze complex source material


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Demonstrated strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teams and as an individual
+ Ability to perform research on international policy and security issues, to synthesize and analyze complex source materials, and to present research results
+ Extensive knowledge of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office

+ Basic knowledge of nuclear nonproliferation and international nuclear safeguards concepts and approaches
+ Familiarity with technologies used in support of international treaties and agreements
+ Experience in international affairs and/or security studies, preferably with a specific focus on nonproliferation issues
+ Knowledge of project management
+ Capability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks
+ Ability to travel domestically and internationally in support of programs
+ Demonstrated versatility, political savvy, and high tolerance for ambiguity

Department Description:

The mission of the International Safeguards and Engagements Department \(6832\) is to provide technical solutions to the international safeguards regime and support the development of safeguards and export control competencies in partner countries\. Through our US government sponsors we research technologies, build capabilities, and provide analyses to support the international nuclear nonproliferation monitoring regime's mission of ensuring that nuclear activities are used for peaceful purposes\. Our work supports the export control regime through commodity identification training\. We engage with international partners through the Visiting Research Scholar Program and the Cooperative Monitoring Center\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
