The Post\-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph\.D\. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee\. The Ph\.D\. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment\. These assignments are for a one\-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one\-year assignments\.

Synthetic biology approaches have the potential to revolutionize biofuel and other chemical production\. High throughput, specific, and sensitive analytical approaches are needed to complement synthetic biology approaches to enable rapid read\-out of microbial and enzyme activities\. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scientist to perform research in the application of chemical and biochemical analysis to biomass conversion at the Joint BioEnergy Institute \( www\.jbei\.org \)\.

The individual will work on a multi\-disciplinary project involving analytical chemists, engineers and biologists to develop analysis capabilities related to bioenergy research\. The research will involve the adaptation of assays to microfluidic format, and integration with mass spectrometers\. We seek to develop platforms for high throughput enzyme and metabolite assays in order to discover new enzymes and metabolic pathways and optimize performance of biomass conversion\.

Required:

Recent Ph\.D\. in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field is required\. Demonstrated hands\-on experience in characterization of biomass\-degrading enzymes is essential\.

A strong record of high technical achievement as evidenced by publication in high\-impact scientific journals and the demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is required\.

Desired:

Knowledge of analytical techniques, ideally mass spectrometry \(e\.g\., MALDI\-TOF\), and fluorescence microscopy\.

Department Description:

Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, located in Livermore, California and Emeryville, CA, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy\. We are a diverse research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research\. We seek to address problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and health security, through new research approaches and advanced technology development including microfluidics and nanofluidics\. We also seek to develop the science base required by industry to produce clean, efficient, and cost\-effective biofuels and other bioproducts on a commercial scale\. This work is carried out in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute \(JBEI\)\. Our department is highly multidisciplinary, comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology \(molecular biology, microbiology, virology, immunology and biochemistry\), chemistry \(analytical, organic and physical\) and engineering \(chemical, mechanical and biomedical\)\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
