Job Description


We are seeking a R&D S&E, Nuclear Engineer to primarily support Sandia’s corporate Nuclear Criticality Safety Program, but will also support the TA\-V nuclear safety basis team\. This role will provide opportunities to apply technical expertise for the execution of Sandia's Nuclear Criticality Safety Program by providing expertise in evaluation of nuclear safety analysis techniques, system design, and operational initiatives and improvements\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support Sandia’s Nuclear Criticality Safety \(NCS\) Program by preparing or reviewing criticality safety assessments, procedures and performing facility assessments
+ Conduct research to improve or develop new techniques and methods to support the NCS Program
+ Conduct evaluations of radiation transport and shielding design; conducting computer modeling for nuclear applications; and supporting research and development projects in the area of nuclear safety
+ Implement, test, and apply software to support nuclear criticality safety validation
+ Support and consult with Sandia facilities and other safety related programs on requirements and implementation of the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program
+ General Safety Basis support of TA\-V facilities including documented safety analysis and technical safety requirements
+ Participate in safety committees for Sandia’s Nuclear Facilities


+ Bachelor’s and advanced degree \(Master’s or PhD\) in relevant STEM discipline; or Bachelor’s in relevant STEM discipline plus 4 years’ experience in lieu of an advanced degree\.
+ Experience in Nuclear Safety
+ Ability to obtain an U\.S\. DOE Q\-clearance


+ Two or more years’ experience with Nuclear Criticality Safety at DOE facilities
+ Operational experience or familiarity with radiological and/or nuclear facilities
+ Knowledge and experience with implementing and/or validating the implementation of safety controls
+ Knowledge and experience with conduct of operations \(ConOps\) in nuclear facilities
+ Experience collaborating with outside technical organizations such as ANSI, ANS, and EFCOG
+ Knowledge or experience performing hazard analyses including but not limited to safety checklist, what\-if/checklist, failure modes and effects analysis, fault/event tree, and qualitative risk analysis
+ Knowledge or experience with the preparation of Documented Safety Analyses \(DSAs\) and Technical Safety Requirements \(TSRs\) for research reactors, critical assemblies, and non\-reactor nuclear facilities
+ Familiarity with nuclear criticality safety software, calculations, analysis, and practices
+ Familiarity with ANSI/ANS\-8 series standards and applicable DOE Orders and standards
+ Familiarity with reactor kinetics and radiation transport calculations and modeling
+ Possession of an active U\.S\. DOE L or Q\-clearance

Department Description:

The Nuclear Safety Analysis Department \(Org\. 1383\), located in Technical Area V \(TA\-V\) at Sandia National Laboratories \(SNL\), is responsible for ensuring that risks associated with operating TA\-V nuclear facilities are analyzed, communicated, and accepted by the governing authorities\. This involves selecting and evaluating nuclear safety controls to ensure protection of the general public, workers, visitors, and the TA\-V staff\. In addition, the Department ensures that the nuclear facility's safety documentation complies with federal law, Department of Energy \(DOE\) requirements and SNL standards and expectations\. Org\. 1383 is also responsible for implementing the Sandia corporate Nuclear Criticality Safety \(NCS\) Program\. Additional responsibilities of Department include research in reactor design and analysis\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
