Job Summary

Analyzes engineering drawings to define the configuration of parts and determine the type and sequence of machine operations\. Selects program routines for the most efficient calculation of dimensional and machining requirements for each part\.

Primary Job Duties

Analyzes engineering drawings to define the configuration of parts and determine the type and sequence of machine operations\. Selects program routines for the most efficient calculation of dimensional and machining requirements for each part\. Provides programming support for machining parts, tools, or sheet metal on numerically controlled machine tools\. Makes proper cutter selections for each part, taking into consideration such factors as speeds, types of cutters, feeds, and control system limitations\. Schedules jobs and implements and monitors schedules\. May modify existing parts programs for engineering changes or program improvements\.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of quality control methods and practices with respect to a single discipline or multiple disciplines\. Knowledge and experience in inspection, examination, or testing activities\. Knowledge of an engineering discipline related to an assigned area of responsibility\. Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret various physical, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics\. Ability to work independently and as well as part of a team\.


Requires high school diploma or equivalent\.

Department Description:

This department is in place for the research and development of prototype machined hardware components made on industry standard milling machines, lathes, wire EDM machines, plunge EDM machines, grinders, buffers, saws, routers, and bead blaster\. Hardware is typically made from a variety of industry standard inert metals, polymers, and composites materials\. In rare cases hazardous materials will be handled with the guidance from industrial hygiene and waste management with controls in place\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
