Job Description


The 9420 Surety Engineer \(SE\) develops, implements, and maintains strategies to prepare the project team and product for successful qualification and delivery\. Surety Engineers interface across the NW and SPP complexes, integrating all team members in relevant multidisciplinary technology areas\. They provide critical R&D support throughout the entire product lifecycle; this support includes requirements engineering and traceability, validation and verification \(V&V\), NEA/TRUST activities, and crucial technical documentation\. SEs exercise critical thinking to identify, assess, and mitigate risks through the practical application of defect prevention to develop a safe, reliable, and robust product\.

Available projects span across all phases of the product realization lifecycle from design and development to production and surveillance/maintenance\. All projects support the National Security Enterprise \(NSE\)\. Opportunities exist in Albuquerque, NM\. Some travel is required to support business needs\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Apply integrated technical judgment using advanced engineering principles, analysis, TRUST and prevention\-based methods to recognize and formulate innovative solutions to a wide variety of technical challenges, including, but not limited to, electrical, mechanical, software, and materials science\.
+ Work with research and development teams to negotiate and define system requirements that enable mission function and performance; develop system conceptual designs to meet those requirements; and define the necessary subsystems, components, and interfaces to realize the system\.
+ Support the creation and management of critical design and production parameters and identify manufacturing activities that affect product performance\.
+ Work with various subsystem teams to verify complex requirements, often from a combination of analysis and simulated environmental testing\.
+ Interface with both the design agency and the production agency to ensure design for manufacturability and mitigate risks and defects early on\.
+ Author written analyses, requirements traceability reports, verification/validation plans, qualification plans, and other essential engineering authorizations that ensure on\-time, on\-budget, consistent product delivery
+ Lead drawing reviews and contribute to design reviews for project team, ensuring requirements have been integrated into the design definition\.
+ Use scientific methods to identify issues and risks and formulate well\-constructed engineering solutions, collect data through observation and experimentation, and develop and test hypotheses\-\-to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions\.
+ Independently assess TRUST assurance issues relevant to a specific defense Program Protection Plan\. The R&D Quality & TRUST Engineer will provide guidance to management and the program’s System TRUST Engineer\.
+ Apply systems engineering principles to research, design, and develop experiments and processes in support of the product in order to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of its design; or to forecast its behavior under specific operating conditions as well as eventual mission characteristics and application\.
+ Understand the nature of system problems; lead project teams through root cause analyses, solution options, and the trade space to evaluate the efficacy of those options; and lead customers and stakeholders through this process\.
+ Evaluate, test, and analyze system functionality and subsystem contribution to system function\.
+ May use statistical knowledge to understand production feasibility, capabilities, or processes to be applied to the solution space; may use physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of verification\.


+ Bachelor of Science in a Science, Engineering or Math discipline plus four years of experience; or Master of Science in a relevant discipline; or doctorate in relevant discipline; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience \(relevant disciplines in science, engineering, and math\)\.


+ Experience with Product Realization Lifecycle\.
+ Experience with R&D Quality & TRUST Engineering principles, tools, methodologies, and best practices\.
+ Experience with product, software, and test equipment design and qualification\.
+ Experience with supplier qualification, improving quality performance, implementing process controls and quality plans\.
+ Experience with reducing risk in a high\-consequence environment\.
+ Experience with improving process capability and production deficiencies while maintaining and improving quality standards\.
+ Experience with developing manufacturing processes through a thorough understanding of product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment\.
+ Experience with defining and reviewing specifications for gauging, fixtures, and tools needed for inspection and product acceptance\.
+ Experience delivering complex engineering products\.
+ Experience with qualification plans, requirements mapping, test plans, and measurement assurance\.
+ Design assurance acumen, including Requirements Engineering/Configuration Management\.
+ Technical analysis acumen, including SPC, FMEA, RCA, HALT/HASS, Mistake Proofing, Design of Experiments and Fagan Inspections\.
+ Experience with Project Management \(leadership experience\)\.
+ Ability to solve complex problems in the absence of clear direction \(experience in ambiguous environments\)\.
+ Ability to facilitate uncompromising, high\-quality standards while establishing and maintaining effective and productive relationships with internal and external customers at all experience and authority levels\.

The Surety Engineering group \(9420\) provides a center of excellence for R&D Technical Quality at Sandia National Labs\. With multidisciplinary engineers at numerous sites, 9420 provides R&D surety engineering and software assurance expertise throughout the entire product realization lifecycle, interfacing with various technology areas in both nuclear and conventional weapon systems\. We deliver fortified technical solutions that increase customer confidence against loss, damage, and faults by minimizing a product’s risk landscape through the prevention and early detection and mitigation of defects, resulting in cost and schedule savings\. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
