:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to support research related to additively manufactured stainless steel\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Plan and perform experiments, install, repair, and maintain diagnostic tools, collect and analyze data with the goal of understanding how process parameters affect microstructure and performance of additively manufactured stainless steel using a ProX 200
+ Perform design necessary to support projects or experiments
+ Publish journal articles and present work at local and national conferences
+ Interact and collaborate with other inter\-disciplinary research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new research opportunities and projects

Required:

+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field
+ Experience in process research and development
+ Experience in designing and conducting experiments
+ Experience with solid model design tools
+ Experience with Materials Processing \(Solidification, Welding, Solidification, Soldering, Brazing\)
+ History of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with laser powder bed additive manufacturing of metals
+ Experience with sensors \(IR cameras, Pyrometers, Acoustic monitors, High speed cameras, etc\.\) and data acquisition
+ Experience with Data Analytics and Image Processing \(Matlab and Python preferred\)
+ Experience with SolidWorks or Creo
+ Experience with topology optimization design software
+ Experience with material characterization tools and instrumentation
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Department Description:

The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories\. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation\. Thin film properties can also be characterized\. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional \(flame, plasma, twin\-wire arc, HVOF\) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low\-pressure plasma spray\. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso\-scale devices, electrical discharge machining \(EDM\), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro\-metrology, as well as technical consulting\. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write \(aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing\) and metal additive \(powder bed and LENS\)\. Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
