Job Description

:

We are seeking graduate student interns to support projects in MEMS technologies\. Our current interests include developing traditional MEMS sensors and actuators\. We also explore and research advanced MEMS technologies, such as, radio frequency and optical devices, and novel MEMS materials\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support mechanical/electrical design
+ Assist with finite element modeling
+ Perform laboratory maintenance and experimentation
+ Assist with data acquisition

Specific job assignments will depend upon the intersection of the needs of the projects at the time and the skills of the student\.

Previous graduate interns have majored in physics, electrical engineering, and aero/mechanical engineering\. We will consider qualified applicants majoring in any science, engineering, or math field\.

Student internships are career development opportunities\. We are especially interested in supporting interns who are interested in long\-term working relationships, i\.e\., year\-round or multiple summers, and who are interested working toward a Ph\.D\. related to MEMS\.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position\.

Desired:

+ Classroom and/or laboratory experience at the graduate level with any of the following would be helpful in making an immediate impact: modeling and simulation, mechanical drafting or electrical layout, laboratory experimentation and data acquisition, computer or microcontroller programming
+ Experience in a graduate research program
+ The ability to think clearly and creatively
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills
+ Eagerness to collaborate in a multi\-disciplinary team environment
+ Strong initiative
+ A strong interest in pursuing a Ph\.D\. related to MEMS

Department Description:

You will be part of the MEMS Technology Department\. We conduct research and development for advanced micro\-electromechanical systems that push the technology envelope for national security applications\. Our broad R&D portfolio includes traditional MEMS sensors and actuators \(e\.g\., inertial sensors and switches\), piezoelectric devices \(e\.g\., ultrasonic transducers\), RF/acoustic devices \(e\.g\., RF filters\), opto/acoustic devices \(e\.g\., optical modulators\), magnetic and photovoltaic devices, and emerging technologies\. We also develop and maintain a comprehensive set of MEMS fabrication processes in Sandia's MESA Silicon and Micro Fabs, where we build MEMS with traditional bulk and surface micromachining, piezoelectric films, damascene and electrodeposited metals, through substrate vias, wafer bonding, and other semiconductor fab processes\. MEMS is an interdisciplinary field\. Our team includes a great diversity of technical backgrounds, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, nuclear engineering, and even civil engineering\. We highly value technical competence and entrepreneurial spirit\. We welcome diversity of all kinds and strive for an inclusive environment\.
