Job Description


This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.


The Component Science and Mechanics Department at Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a postdoctoral appointee in nonlinear structural dynamics\. The appointee will work in collaboration with a broad team including engineers, computer scientists, experimentalists and mathematicians to develop new methodologies to analyze behavior of large\-scale nonlinear engineering structures\.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

+ Solve high fidelity, nonlinear finite element models with using high performance computing platforms
+ Research topics related to nonlinear modal analysis for both conservative and non\-conservative systems
+ Develop numerical algorithms to predict nonlinear system behavior using techniques such as continuation, multi\-harmonic balance, and/or collocation methods
+ Investigate ways to integrate numerical methods into finite element software by partnering with code development team
+ Present novel developments both internally and externally at various meetings, seminars and conferences


+ Recent PhD \(within the last 5 years\) in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or other applicable branches of science and engineering
+ Strong background in nonlinear structural dynamics and vibrations, including numerical methods, finite element analysis, and modal analysis
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy security clearance
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer \-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate professional conferences


+ Excellent computer programming and code development skills
+ Experience with numerical methods to solve nonlinear dynamics systems, including but not limited to harmonic balance, continuation and collocation
+ Knowledge of experimental techniques for vibration testing and modal analysis
+ Candidate should be able to work independently, with the ability to integrate effectively into a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment
+ This individual should demonstrate strong interpersonal and organization skills

Department Description:

The Component Science and Mechanics Department \(1556\) provides state\-of\-the\-art mechanics/dynamics research and science\-based engineering solutions for component development and assessment\. Focus areas for the department include: viscoelastic mechanics, joining, deformation, fracture, failure, mechanical interfaces, constitutive materials models, reduced order models, multi\-physics/multi\-scale models, component reliability, margin assessment, and uncertainty propagation\. Areas of active interest include: interconnects and encapsulation, fatigue and fracture, energy dissipation at contacts, microstructural mechanics, shock and vibration, crack initiation and propagation, and adaptive structures\. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and nonlinear systems, are utilized in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
