Job Description


We are looking for a mechanical engineer to oversee center 2500s Powder Bed AM facility which contains 3 metal powder bed printers, post\-processing equipment, and metrology equipment\. On any given day this job could entail:

+ Ensuring all equipment is safe, in compliance with SNL regulations, in calibration, and operational
+ Interfacing with customers across the lab to schedule, setup, and modify builds as needed for printing
+ Conducting or supporting work led by others to develop processes for printing new alloys or structures
+ Some travel required


+ Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical, chemical, or materials engineering; or bachelor's in mechanical, chemical, or materials engineering with 4 or more years of relevant experience\.
+ Experience operating/maintaining complex industrial equipment \(e\.g\. PLC controlled furnaces, thin film deposition equipment, etc\.\)
+ Current DOE L or Q clearance and ability to maintain a Q clearance


+ Good customer relationship & communication skills
+ Demonstrated record of maintaining documentation of required safety, maintenance, and calibration records
+ Experience with additive manufacturing equipment, in particular metal powder bed systems
+ A willingness to showcase the potential offerings of the 2500 Powder Bed AM facility and develop the customer base
+ Knowledge and experience with post processing equipment to produce and characterize finished AM parts \(wire EDM, surface grinder, metrology equipment\)
+ Experience with CAD software \(e\.g\. Solidworks or ProE/Creo\) and GCode, CNC tools, and tool path generation
+ Demonstrated experience leading support technologists and managing customer interfaces

Department Description:

The Neutron Generator Production Science and Technology Department is responsible for completing projects that address materials and processes utilized in the fabrication of neutron tubes and neutron generators\. The Department focuses on obtaining fundamental information that supports critical attribute definition for those relevant materials and processes\. Most projects are long\-range \(one to three years\) in nature\. A combination of internal expertise and collaborative work with other organizations both at Sandia as well as outside organizations such as Los Alamos National Laboratory and New Mexico Institute of Mining Technology is used\. Research Areas within the Department include: properties of materials containing tritium, thin film structure of rare earth and transition metals/materials, surface and interface properties, gas\-solid interaction, hydride formation, and hydride thin film properties\.
