The United States Geophysical Monitoring System \(US GMS\) project is a large\-scale re\-development effort to redesign the US GMS for the Air Force Technical Applications Center \(AFTAC\)\. Sandia has worked with AFTAC to define requirements and architectural design for the modernized system leveraging COTS, web technology and agile development methods\. We are seeking an R&D Systems Engineer to work with software teams through development and delivery using the Scaled Agile Framework \(SAFe\) methodology\. We are looking for someone who has experience as a systems engineer on software development projects\. This project has both high impact and visibility\.

GMS is a critical element of the US government nuclear test treaty monitoring program\. It provides data acquisition, analysis, and reporting to detect and characterize nuclear detonations within the Earth or at low altitudes based on data from networks of ground\-based sensors covering three waveform technologies: seismic, infrasonic, and hydroacoustic\.

This position will also support the International Data Center \(IDC\) as it is a variant of GMS\. The IDC will be deployed to Vienna, Austria\. We will be working with both the US and international customers to ensure the systems meet requirements and delivered and integrated into their operational setting\.

The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting research and development conceptual system trade studies for the program, as well as working with our customer and user community to facilitate the design and deployment of future systems and enhancements\. The successful EO SE needs to be able to interface and coordinate with a broad group of engineers, mission analysts, partners and capability providers, as well as other external organizations\.

On any given day you may be called on to:

+ Support the development and management system and subsystem requirements with particular attention to traceability, technical rationale, allocation and flow\-down, and verification methods/strategies
+ Track requirement changes and potential tradeoffs and work with external customers to resolve requirement issues
+ Assist Product Management with tracing project features, dependencies, and critical paths
+ Help coordinates development, testing, and acceptance activities
+ Participate directly in agile development process by communication allocated requirements, solution intent and acceptance criteria to software development teams
+ Interface with customer system engineers to successfully complete system sell\-off and transition to operation
+ Engage on the deployment process for GMS and IDC with the team and customers\.
+ Some domestic and international travel may be required to support program needs\.


+ Requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM discipline plus entry level Engineering and Operations experience; or equivalent combination of completed STEM education and relevant Engineering & Operations experience\.
+ Familiarity with large\-scale requirements management and decomposition
+ Experience with developing a verification and validation plan, as well as scaling system testing and traceability to derived requirements
+ Demonstrated commitment to producing high\-quality results and a focused attention to detail is essential
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE and SCI clearance


+ Experience with Agile development methodologies
+ Experience with Scaled Agile Framework \(SAFe\)
+ Experience with Collaborative Lifecycle Management tools \(e\.g\. IBM Jazz/Rational tools\)
+ Experience developing mission critical data processing and analysis systems
+ Experience/education in system engineering and/or cloud architecture
+ Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted Q\-level security clearance
+ Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
+ Ability to work with various disciplines across multiple development subteams
+ Strong organizational skills
+ Position will require occasional travel
+ The ability to handle multiple tasks and handle competing priorities
+ Strong customer\-focus and proactive response to questions/requests with demonstrated exceptional follow through
+ A current or recent SCI clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
