Job Description


We are seeking an R&D Computational Scientist to be part of our energetic materials team\. You will be part of the energetics Capability Realization Team \(CRT\)\. The energetics CRT evaluates future needs regarding energetic material models and experiments\. We team effectively with our experimental counterparts in the Energetic Components Center \(2500\) and deliver results for our customers\. We evaluate data, assist in developing discovery experiments, and work on models that can be used at relevant scales\. Our models are given to other researchers to simulate large systems to assess overall safety\. You will also team with other researchers to impact energetic material safety in the DoD through various technical working groups\. Periodically, you may be asked to assist in accident investigations that have national impact\.


+ MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline \(science, engineering, materials, math, computer science, etc\.\)\.
+ Experience in developing science\-based computer models of energetic materials exposed to abnormal thermal environments such as fire\.
+ Experience with shock physics associated with energetic materials, including deflagration to detonation transition\.
+ Experience with high pressure thermodynamics\.
+ A strong publication track record including but not limited to journal articles\.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance and obtain and maintain additional clearances as required\.


+ Experience programming in various languages including FORTRAN 90, C, C\+\+, MATLAB\.
+ Ability to run finite element codes such as SIERRA thermal or COMSOL Multiphysics\.
+ Ability to run Sandia’s shock codes \(CTH and ALEGRA\)\.
+ Ability to validate computer models using techniques such as Latin Hypercube Sampling \(LHS\) techniques\.
+ Demonstrated ability to team with others and deliver results\.

Department Description:

The Fluid and Reactive Processes Department \(1516\) conducts world\-class research on transport phenomena \(mass, momentum, energy\) for processes that span multiple length and time scales \(nano \->meso \->macroscale\)\. Our research is applied to complex fluids, energetic material response for assessing safety and performance of weapon components, and the transport of and within disordered heterogeneous materials\. We develop cookoff models of various energetic materials with data from small\-scale experiments\. These models are then scaled\-up to larger systems and are used for safety analysis\. Our models are documented in peer\-reviewed journal publications\. We have also developed models describing mesoscale features including reactive nanolaminates\. Our work has been presented at conferences around the world and we team with groups that include researchers from the DOE, DoD, NATO countries, Japan, etc\.
