Job Description


We are seeking a Scientific Applications and User Support Manager, in Group 9320, Computing Systems and Technology Integration\. Department services include the OneStop service\-desk for HPC and scientific/engineering computing, deep technical support for HPC users and applications, HPC application and system performance analysis, delivery and support of HPC software development environment tools, help\-desk services for some of Sandia’s modeling and simulation codes, and development, delivery and support of scientific data analysis/visualization capabilities\. The Department’s services support the full range of Sandia’s mission spaces, primarily through two programs: the NNSA’s Advanced Simulation and Computing \(ASC\) program, and Sandia’s Institutional Computing program\. As an extension of its mainstream activities, the Department also leverages core competencies to support Strategic Partnership Programs/Projects\. The opportunity exists for a highly motivated manager to join the 9320 leadership team to continue stewarding and developing our capabilities and services on behalf of Sandia’s technical community\. The position offers substantial challenges as well as opportunities for personal and professional growth and the chance to have a broad impact across Sandia mission programs, potentially also at a broader community and/or national level\.

The selected candidate should have a proven track record of meeting and exceeding customer expectations, successfully teaming cross\-organizationally, and consistently delivering results\. The manager will be expected to lead and develop staff with backgrounds in areas such as computer science, computational science, engineering, software development/engineering, and information systems\. He/she will enable the success of their staff through career development support and will assist with ongoing programs and projects to ensure success from a staffing, cost, schedule, and performance perspective\. The manager will be expected to establish and sustain core services and capabilities, as well as key relationships with partners and customers in both Sandia’s and external computational science and engineering communities\. The manager will be expected to actively engage at program levels, in direct support of the 9320 Senior Manager, to meet responsibilities for the ASC and Institutional Computing programs, among others\. The manager will be expected to work closely with other department managers, Center staff and management, and business support personnel to establish business opportunities and relationships and to advance Department and Group objectives\. The manager must assure continuous improvement of a strong safety, security and quality culture\.


+ A bachelors degree in computer science, computational science, engineering, or other STEM discipline plus twelve years of experience; or a graduate degree in computer science, computational science, engineering, or other STEM discipline plus eight years of relevant experience


+ Two years of leadership experience
+ Strong leadership, teaming, and interpersonal skills\.

+ Experience with high performance computing and relevant application domains\.
+ In\-depth knowledge related to computational modeling, simulation and analysis as it pertains to the physical and engineering sciences\.
+ Clear and effective written and verbal communication\. Demonstrated ability to develop and present ideas and results in oral and written form\.
+ Experience and familiarity with Sandia’s programmatic structure, with demonstrated strong business acumen\.
+ Experience and ability to successfully manage project commitments including customer interfaces and collaborations that span multiple organizations\.
+ Experience, ability, and strong commitment to partner across organizational and institutional boundaries, both internal and external to Sandia\.
+ Familiarity with Sandia’s R&D enterprise and S&E environment and capabilities\.
+ Familiarity with Sandia’s S&T, NW and ASC programs and associated communities\.
+ Familiarity with National Security mission spaces and associated communities\.
+ Experience and/or familiarity in areas related to big data and data sciences\.
+ Broad experience with the application and/or delivery of systems for S&E applications\.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
