Job Description

:

There is an immediate need for a summer student supporting the thermal analyses within the Structural and Thermal Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories \(SNL\) to support a number of projects for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration \(NASA\), the Department of Energy \(DOE\), the National Nuclear Security Administration \(NNSA\), and the United States \(U\.S\.\) Nuclear Regulatory Commission \(NRC\)\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support the design and evaluation of transportation containers, engineering components and structures to thermal loading conditions resulting from specific design or accident scenarios
+ Support staff analysts with system and component computer model development and analyses using both commercially available and in\-house thermal mechanics codes
+ Work as part of a team of analysts supporting an array of thermal analyses

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Completed two years of undergraduate curriculum

+ Previous intern experience at Sandia National Laboratories
+ Interest in thermal analyses
+ Knowledge of finite element analyses and related FEA software

Department Description:

The Structural and Thermal Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories \(SNL\) supports a number of projects within the Nuclear Energy Safety Technologies Group\. The department and group focuses on analyses and experiments aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the nation's energy systems and infrastructure, with particular emphasis on civilian nuclear power\.

The Group's primary customer is the U\. S\. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Group serves as the SNL point\-of\-contact for the NRC\. Key technical areas for our NRC\-sponsored work include severe accident modeling, security analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, human reliability analysis, fire protection, and experiments\.

The Group also works extensively with other Sandia organizations and with the Department of Energy in a variety of areas related to risk and reliability analysis, human reliability analysis, structural analysis and modeling, fire protection, nonproliferation applications such as nuclear fuel cycle transparency monitoring, and experimental programs requiring remote locations and unique facilities\.

Technical staff capabilities include nuclear, mechanical and electrical engineering, mathematics and statistics, computer science, project management, and regulatory compliance\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
