Job Description

:

We are seeking a Safety Engineer to review systems, associated support equipment, facilities, functional specifications, and operations to ensure hazards are mitigated and in compliance with safety and health regulations\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Implement, administer, and advise others on hazard control techniques, processes, and programs and evaluates their effectiveness preventing or mitigating hazardous environments\.
+ Investigate and evaluate requirements for developing procedures, as necessary, to promote the safe conduct of all work practices and the prevention of hazardous exposure to the surrounding community\.
+ Take steps to ensure that workplace conditions comply with applicable federal, state, or other occupational safety and health requirements\.
+ Assist with preparing and maintaining required records\.
+ Investigate, prepare, and submit, as required, reports on injuries and fatalities\. Develop and conduct safe work procedure training\.

Required:

+ Master of Science degree in Occupational Health/Safety, Engineering or a closely related field; or a Bachelors degree in Occupational Health/Safety, Engineering or a closely related field plus five or more years of relevant work experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience\.

Desired:

+ ASP/CSP certification\.
+ Working knowledge in one or more of the following areas: electrical safety, ergonomics, explosive safety, hazardous energy control \(lockout tagout\), pressure safety, construction safety, firearms safety, traffic safety and aviation safety\.
+ Experience conducting accident investigations and recording and reporting occupational injuries and illnesses\.
+ Experience performing safety training including OSHA 10 and 30 Hour courses\.
+ Experience with conducting readiness reviews\.
+ Understanding of DOE orders/codes/standards\.
+ Work experience applying safety principles in a research and development environment\.
+ Current DOE security L or Q clearance\.
+ Construction safety experience\.

Department Description:

Department 06322 manages the Corporate Safety Engineering \(SE\) programs for the Laboratories\. The Department is responsible for developing Environment, Safety and Health \(ES&H\) Manual sections and the supporting infrastructure to implement Integrated Safety Management, DOE orders and OSHA regulations for SE Programs\. Customers include the general Laboratories population, ES&H professionals, and ES&H coordinators\. In addition to leading SE programs, specific department activities include OSHA Recordkeeping and reporting, injury prevention, the safety campaign, and the Explosive Information System \(EIS\), records and reporting administration, and supporting Division ES&H Customer Support Teams with workplace and personal monitoring\. The Department also provides a cadre of Safety professionals who are a part of the Division ES&H Customer Support Teams\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
