Job Description


We are seeking an Intern Year Round \- R&D Undergrad

Sandia’s Risk and Reliability Department is looking for undergraduate student interns to work on projects involving the development of probabilistic risk assessment \(PRA\)/quantitative risk assessment \(QRA\) for safety assessment of energy technologies including nuclear power plants, transportation, and infrastructure\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist in developing advanced analytic tools
+ Assist in the develoment of PRA and QRA algorithms based on state\-of\-the\-art science and engineering models using Sandia’s unique experimental, modeling, and computational capabilities
+ Assist with technical projects as assigned


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Completed coursework in general chemistry
+ General understanding of chemical engineering
+ Ability to effectively communicate work


+ Interest in nuclear power technical fields such as chemical, nuclear, electrical, or mechanical engineering or physics
+ Interest in risk methodologies

Department Description:

The Risk and Reliability Analysis Department conducts probabilistic risk assessments \(PRA\) and analyses, human reliability analysis, fire risk analysis research, and cyber related risk for high consequence systems such as for nuclear power plants\. The focus of the department's efforts is on operational risk analysis of high\-consequence engineered systems including civilian nuclear power reactors and transportation systems as well as seeking R&D solutions related to risk related issues\. The Department's client base includes the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy, Naval Reactors, and other federal and non\-federal entities\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
