We are seeking an Intern \- Materials Science and Plasma Physics R&D Undergraduate Summer

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with RF\-plasma discharges for plasma\-material interactions studies
+ Perform surface analyses using low energy ion scattering, Auger electron spectroscopy, and temperature programmed desorption
+ Simulate surface sputtering and ion implantation
+ Characterize hydrogen permeation through materials
+ Analyze Langmuir probe measurements of RF plasmas
+ Perform optical spectroscopy characterization of surfaces
+ Design and work with ultra\-high vacuum \(UHV\) instruments


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position\.

Additional Requirements:

+ Completion of undergraduate coursework in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or related field


+ Hands\-on experience working in an experimental physics/materials science research laboratory, particularly working with ultra\-high vacuum equipment
+ Prior programming experience with LabView, C\+\+, Mathematica and/or Matlab, as well as familiarity with the Linux operating environment
+ Experience using AutoCAD or other mechanical design software

Department Description:

The Energy Innovation Department at Sandia/CA has an opening for a student internship focusing on materials science research\. This position will involve applying multiple experimental and/or modeling techniques to study plasma\-surface interactions relevant to magnetic fusion energy\. Plasma\-material interactions are considered one of the most complex and challenging issues facing the advancement of fusion as a viable energy source\. Of particular interest to our group is how hydrogen and helium plasma\-exposure creates defects within materials, and how these defects affect hydrogen transport\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
