Job Description

:

California Stockpile Systems is responsible for the stewardship of nuclear deterrence systems developed in the Livermore Valley\. Through a robust program of scientific inquiry, a multidisciplinary engineering team is responsible for leading sustainment and assessment activities to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the stockpile\. Stockpile Systems strives yearly to increase the quality and depth of its technical basis used to evaluate the system’s state of health, which culminates in an Annual Assessment Report sent to the President of the United States\.

Required:

Requires a bachelor’s and master’s degree in relevant STEM discipline \(Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or related technical field\) plus two or more years experience; or bachelor's and doctorate in relevant STEM discipline\. The requirement for a STEM Master’s degree can be waived for candidates with a bachelor’s in a relevant STEM discipline and engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development\.

Ability to obtain and maintain a U\.S\. DOE Q security clearance\.

Desired:

Experience working with DOE, NNSA, DOD, or Federally Funded Research and Development Centers; current DOE Q\-level security clearance or equivalent; systems engineering experience; project management experience; or mechanical engineering skills, such as computer aided design, structural dynamics, vibration characterization, structural analysis, heat transfer analysis, laboratory measurement techniques and diagnostics, computational simulation and modeling, integration of subsystems, fabrication of prototypes, and/or conductance of qualification tests\.

Department Description:

The W80 Systems Engineering Department has stockpile stewardship responsibility for the W80 and W84 warheads\. The W80\-0,1 is the warhead for the Navy Tomahawk and the Air Force's ALCM cruise missiles\. The President's Annual Assessment Report drives Sandia to increase yearly its technical basis of the safety and reliability of the warhead\. Specifically the team is focused on understanding the "design margin" of the fielded weapon through driving the system to failure\. This knowledge is used to adjust annual surveillance activities\. Through these efforts we are breaking new ground in our knowledge of the weapon, and focusing this knowledge to critically evaluate the performance of the weapon\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
