Job Description


We are seeking a R&D graduate summer student for the Summer Product Realization Institute for NW \(NW SPRINT\)\. The selected candidate will be participating in design competition that challenges teams to design and produce an additively manufactured safety device in an 8 week time frame\. The competition starts beginning of June and wraps up the first week of August\.

The selected candidate will perform entry\-level work within a research and development, science and engineering environment working in conjunction with Sandia staff on projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment\-\-which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist in the creation and application of scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems
+ Support work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying an understanding of engineering and scientific principles
+ Assist Sandia National Laboratory Staff Members in observing and/or conducting experiments
+ Gather and analyze data
+ Assemble hardware


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

+ Hard working and experience troubleshooting and building capabilities involving electrical, mechanical and optical components
+ Ability to break down a complex problem into simple terms •Hands on experience involving an electro\-mechanical\-optical system
+ Experience or exposure to design engineering and additive manufacturing or 3D printing is desired
+ Candidate should be a self\-starter, motivated with a strong desire to learn in a wide variety of topics in multiple disciplines
+ Good written and oral communication

The successful candidate must currently be pursuing a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, or other related field\.

AM tool is a complex tool involving multiple disciplines \- electrical, mechanical, and optical\. Understanding all areas as an integrated picture while being able to perform measurements with supervision and then guarantee the validity of the data through critical analysis\. Understand nano\-fabrication methods and how several process steps are combined to create an integrated process flow for manufacturing simple devices\. Understanding the inks and associated purity of the materials as to how it impacts the product\. The successful candidate will work in a team environment while at the same time be capable of working independently performing test and characterization of semiconductor devices\.

Department Description:

The Summer Product Realization Institute for Nuclear Weapons \(NW SPRINT\) is a design program focused on increasing agility and facilitating the development of novel concepts and ideas on a compressed schedule\. Over the course of the summer, each design team will successfully design, fabricate, and test a functional device\. Each year’s design challenge is relevant to Sandia National Laboratories’ core mission and offers opportunities for student interns to partner with technical staff mentors, researchers from across the laboratory, and other student interns\.

The NW SPRINT program focuses on using advanced manufacturing technologies to innovate and revolutionize the products that Sandia National Laboratories delivers\. NW SPRINT interns are placed into collaborative teams with a staff mentor\. Separate teams from across the lab compete in the SPRINT challenge to develop the best design\. The NW SPRINT program focuses on using advanced manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing or 3D printing, to achieve higher performing design and to push the limits on technical capabilities\.

NW SPRINT actively recruits undergraduate and graduate school students with the following majors: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, material science, and other relevant disciplines\. Promising designs or technologies developed within NW SPRINT are also considered for future sounding rocket experiments\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
