Job Description


We are seeking an environmental engineering summer undergrad student intern to support a Sandia environmental program with requirements originating from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act\. The successful applicant will join a program that performs groundwater monitoring, environmental inspections, environmental monitoring, waste management, information management, and reporting\. The program manages dozens of Sandia groundwater wells and Sandia sites located on Kirtland Air Force Base\. The program technical staff includes a lead engineer, geoscientists, and environmental scientists\. Assignment offers the opportunity to gain experience with the operations of a large environmental program and use critical thinking for long\-term solutions and impacts\. On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Review field work and data collection technology and capabilities to recommend and implement updated field data collection and management processes
+ Technical writing and process visualization
+ Analyze and architect system requirements and program definition framework and improve requirements management solutions
+ Learn and support configuration management
+ Maintain SharePoint sites


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Pursuing of an undergraduate degree in environmental engineering
+ Entering senior year and completion of chemistry and hydrology, hydrogeology or fluid mechanics
+ Experience or training with organizational management and teamwork

+ Applicant is an undergraduate entering senior year with excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to contribute effectively diverse team of scientists and engineers, self\-motivated and creative problem\-solving skills
+ Experience or training with field experiments
+ Experience with technical writing, data reviews, and data visualization including GIS
+ Experience presenting to non\-technical, general public
+ Demonstrated ability to use a variety of IT tools in support of technical assignments including matlab and ArcGiS

Department Description:

The Analytical Services Department is responsible for the performance of Sandia's Long\-Term Stewardship \(LTS\) Program as well as providing Analytical Services utilizing the on\-site laboratory, Radiation Protection and Sample Diagnostics \(RPSD\) program, and off\-site laboratories through the Sample Management Office \(SMO\)\. The LTS Program provides long\-term protection of human health and the environment from hazards associated with Sandia's residual environmental contamination in accordance with the requirements of the New Mexico Environment Department \(NMED\)\. The LTS Program responsibilities include sampling deep groundwater wells, sustaining engineered evapo\-transpirative landfill covers, inspecting legacy sites, and managing historical environmental data\. Analytical Services provides compliant and legally defensible analytical analysis in support of operational, permit and regulatory requirements for internal and external agencies\. The RPSD program performs radioactive and radiochemistry analysis with uniform and approved quality assurance \(QA\) requirements, a training program, operational procedures, standardized equipment, and documentation\. In addition, the RPSD program provides technical support to internal and external organizations that require radioactive sample analysis as part of their mission\. For off\-site analysis, the SMO program provides centralized management of samples and analyses performed by contract laboratories\. The SMO conducts technical and administrative support services for sampling and analysis activities including sample packing and shipping\. SMO ensures that analytical data is of adequate technical quality and content to meet customer data quality and project requirements\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
