Job Description

:

We are seeking a R&D, Electrical Engineer who will support the DC Electrical Project at Sandia National Laboratories Primary Standards Lab \(PSL\)\. The PSL is an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory providing metrology support to the National Nuclear Security Administration \(NNSA\)\. This position requires technical aptitude and experience in metrology spanning a broad range of measurement areas, systems and equipment, methods, and procedures with the potential to have an immediate impact on the work at the PSL\. The ability to work in a team environment and to provide engineering oversight to solve measurement issues is critical\. The responsibilities include development, deployment and maintenance of high accuracy electrical measurement systems, analyzing and reducing measurement data, developing effective calibration procedures, conducting complex measurements and calibrations, and programming of computer controlled test equipment\. The selected individual will be expected to develop and provide measurement solutions and recommendations to resolve customer measurement issues and to improve measurement accuracies\. A key role for this individual will be to interact with colleagues at other primary standards labs and with engineers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology \(NIST\)\. All assigned tasks will be completed in accordance with laboratory procedures, policies, and practices\. Occasional travel to other sites may be required\. This is a unique opportunity to become part of a dynamic organization with broad interactions across NNSA, SNL, and WFO programs\.

The selected individual will be expected to apply integrated technical judgment\-\-which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses\-\-to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions\. The selected individual will base the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles, create and apply scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems, use physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development and plan, conduct, and execute Sandia's science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration\.

Required:

+ Graduate degree in Engineering, Physics or the Physical Sciences
+ Experience in metrology and/or making complex, precise measurements
+ Experience developing or troubleshooting equipment at the component or system level
+ Experience programming computer controlled equipment
+ Experience in developing methods, processes, technical work documents

Desired:

+ Evidence of strong academic performance
+ Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience of multiple disciplines to include some combination of the following: electronics; electricity; physics; electromagnetics; microwave theory; statistics; complex circuit schematics; bridge, ratiometric, and potentiometric measurement techniques; computerized systems; and system integration
+ Familiarity with system level operation of electrical measuring equipment including one or more of the following: multifunction calibrators, network analyzers, power meters, long scale digital multi\-meters, instrumentation amplifiers, oscilloscopes, electrometers or other measurement equipment
+ At least one year of experience performing sophisticated DC Electrical measurements, calibrations, and certifications
+ Experience with Electrical Primary Standards, including the Josephson Voltage Standard or Quantized Hall Resistance Standard
+ Experience with very high resistance measurement systems, such as a teraohmeter or terabridge
+ Experience with a broad application of instruments, assemblies, standards, and systems
+ Experience working within a rigorous quality system in an accredited standards lab environment
+ Desire to learn new skills as required and develop expertise in areas that may be unfamiliar
+ Experience using MetCal, LabView, Python, or VisualBasic
+ Experience with ISO 17025, Z540, QC\-1 or other quality assurance programs
+ Experience with measurement uncertainty, propagation of error, and error budgets
+ Excellent teaming, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
+ Self\-motivated and willing to work on a diverse range of projects in a fast paced environment

Department Description:

Department 9143, Primary Electrical Standards, provides calibration support to the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including support for SNL research and production organizations\. Department 9143 consists of three project groups: DC Electrical, AC Electrical, and Microwave\. Each project develops and maintains primary standards, consults on measurement problems, calibrates reference standards, and assists in technical oversight of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories\. The overall calibration program is accredited by the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
