Job Description


We are seeking a highly motivated and team oriented component engineer to support Gas Transfer System development\. The candidate must show strong aptitude for verbal and written communication\. We expect to hire someone who can bring their talents to a multidisciplinary team and work collectively to address challenging problems\. This position requires travel to New Mexico, Kansas City, and Savannah River\.

We are looking for an engineer to:

1\. Support the design, feature development, integration, testing and manufacture of pressure vessels, and valves designed to enable gas flow\.

2\. Work with a manufacturing partner on developing production ready drawings, process development and component qualification for full scale production\.

3\. Work with systems engineering on component integration, interfaces and assembly\.

4\. Develop and execute test plans to evaluate a component’s expected life cycle\.


•BS degree plus 5 years experience or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

•Experience with CREO, CAD, or SolidWorks

•Ability to travel up to 15% of the time;

•Ability to obtain and maintain a U\.S\. DOE Q security clearance\.


•Leadership and project management skills

•Experience in managing project plans, project schedules, project deliverables, project costs, and technical and programmatic risks

•Experience with mechanical component design and production qualification

•Experience with creation and review of product drawings and product specifications \(e\.g\. ASME Y14\.5M dimensioning and tolerancing, specification template\)

•Experience with experimental methods, data acquisition and analysis

•Experience in high pressure gas experiments

•familiarity with welding technologies

•Familiarity with experimental fluid dynamics

•Familiarity with writing, understanding, and/or updating computer codes \(e\.g\. MATLAB, C\+\+, Fortran\)

•Familiarity with manufacturing and related production processes

Department Description:

The Gas Transfer System \(GTS\) Engineering Department is a group of engineers, material scientists, and technologists who are responsible for the design and maintenance of gas transfer systems for national security programs\. Our work has three major components: scientific research, advanced component development, and engineering support of existing systems\. Responsibilities include high\-pressure gas reservoir design, explosive component design, development of welding technologies, and investigating the effect of hydrogen isotopes in various materials\. The department operates a high pressure testing facility and a welding/brazing facility\. Our personnel routinely interact with other Sandia engineering and research groups, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, production agencies \(located in Kansas City, Savannah River, and Texas\), the National Nuclear Security Agency \(NNSA\), and the Department of Defense \(DOD\)\.

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
