Job Description


We are seeking a Staff Systems Engineer to join the Advance Systems Engineering and Deployment group to lead our efforts in designing, developing, and deploying engineered solutions to fundamental national security challenges in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work individually, or as a team to innovate and brainstorm new solutions to engineering\-related problems that are not fully defined or understood by applying scientific theories and engineering methods to develop new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems;
+ Carry out a scientific method’s hypothesis, test, and evaluate cycle for a research concept which brings disparate technologies together to solve system issues;
+ Participate in proposal writing and brainstorming activities to plan, conduct, and execute Sandia’s science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research and development;
+ Brief project manager and/or federal sponsors about the project goals and milestones, evaluate and minimize project risk for mission function and performance;
+ Lead initiatives to provide new insight or help define requirements for a system\-level architecture that combines a number of component parts or subsystems into a complete functional system;
+ Develop Engineered Safety documentation, comply with ES&H requirements, and be responsible for planning and coordinating all activity associated with a research laboratory\.


+ Bachelor's degree in relevant STEM discipline;
+ Master’s degree in relevant discipline plus two or more years of experience; or PhD in relevant discipline; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience \(relevant disciplines in science, technology, engineering, and math\);
+ Aptitude in applying science\-based engineering principles and innovative engineering solutions to capabilities using the scientific method’s hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques to bring disparate technologies together to creatively solve system issues\.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.


+ Ability to conduct experimental research and develop exploratory systems to innovate and deliver solutions to customers in mission areas not fully defined or understood;
+ Aptitude and desire to apply systems engineering principles and science\-based innovation to a wide range of cross\-cutting problems in national security;
+ Capable of assembling and troubleshooting prototype systems involving mechanical, fluid, and electrical subsystems;
+ Experience with standard laboratory instrumentation, electronics, and electromechanical systems;
+ Experience with software\-based hardware control and/or data acquisition and interfacing with prototype systems \(e\.g\. LabView, etc\.\);
+ Familiarity with subtractive and additive manufacturing fabrication methods and design definition software \(e\.g\. CAD/CAM, FEM\);
+ Familiarity with the chemistry and/or biological sciences and application of microscale engineered solutions to problems in these disciplines;
+ Experience with the design, assembly, operation, and integration of microfluidic or microsystems for applications to biological/chemical systems;
+ Familiarity with basic finite element modeling \(e\.g\. Comsol Multiphysics\) and software programming languages;
+ Experienced and motivated, self\-starter who participates in a challenging process eliciting technical information from others, analyzing data and effectively communicating results to executive management;
+ Ability to conduct experimental or exploratory systems to innovate and deliver solutions to customers in mission areas not fully defined or understood;
+ Trains and/or provides work direction to junior and less experienced engineers;
+ Leads engineering teams to the successful completion of project goals;
+ Ability to plan, prioritize, organize, execute, and document work with minimal guidance and maximum attention to detail;
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively convey technical information to team members, collaborators, and sponsors with various technical backgrounds and levels of expertise\.

Department Description:

The Advanced Systems Engineering and Deployment Department \(8625\) is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying engineered solutions to fundamental national security challenges in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats\. The department is a multi\-disciplinary organization comprised primarily of mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineers engaging in science\-based engineering and component development to support a broad range of research and development activities\. The projects within 8625 often involve teaming with other groups with expertise in molecular biology, synthetic chemistry, radiation physics, and nuclear weapons to develop prototypes and impact how researchers study fundamental phenomena or turn basic scientific understanding into functional capabilities\. Principal sponsors for the efforts led by the department include the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, and Energy; and various other federal, state and local agencies\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
