Job Description


The Applied Photonic Microsystems Department is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee with an emphasis in nanophotonic and microphotonic technologies\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support research involving nanophotonics and nonlinear optics\.
+ Support research in areas including metamaterials, plasmonic, optical emitters and absorbers, and phononic devices, and other optical technologies\.
+ Design, simulate, fabricate, and/or characterize novel optical devices, materials, and systems\.
+ Study new physics phenomenon and evaluate new concepts\.
+ Report research results in top\-tier journals and conferences\.
+ Generate new intellectual property through patent filing\.


+ Ph\.D\. degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering or Science, Physics, or other related technical areas, conferred within five years prior to employment\.
+ Experience in the design and simulation of optical metamaterials\.
+ Experience infinite element method tools, such as COMSOL, Matlab/Simulink, or similar packages\.


+ Expertise in integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, or related topics\.
+ Experience performing original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publication in top\-tier journals, and conference papers and presentations\.
+ Familiarity with the following: Group theory applications to metamaterial; Optical isolators and circulators\.
+ Numerical techniques for optimization and sensitivity analysis; Solid state physics and phenomena and physical optics\.
+ Experience in design and simulation of novel optical structures and material with commercial and custom codes\.
+ Experience in near\-infrared optical test and characterization techniques, associated optics, detectors, and spectroscopies\.
+ Familiarity with laboratory optical bench optics, electronics, optoelectronics, and safe use of lasers; able to design and carry out laser\-based optical experiments\.
+ Expertise in C\+\+ programming for scientific computing and GUI development\.
+ Self\-motivated, with strong communications skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment\.

Department Description:

The Applied Photonic Microsystems Department develops and matures state of the art photonic technologies for a variety of national security purposes\. Our team of interdisciplinary researchers innovates, develops, and applies novel technologies including silicon photonics, nanophotonics, metamaterials, plasmonics, nano\-optomechanics, quantum optics, and chip\-scale optical system, spanning fundamental research and path\-finding engineering solutions\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\.
