Job Description

:

The Electromagnetic Theory Department is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with an emphasis in electromagnetic modeling of nanophotonic systems and metamaterials\. Experience is desired in both theoretical analysis and computational simulation using commercial and/or specialized end\-user\-developed software\.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

+ Support research involving nanophotonics, metamaterials, plasmonic and phononic devices, and/or optics
+ Design and simulate novel optical devices, materials, and systems \(e\.g\., Huygens’ metasurfaces, phase gradient metasurfaces, holograms, etc\.\)
+ Study new physics phenomena and evaluate new concepts
+ Report research results in top\-tier journals and conferences
+ Generate new intellectual property through patent filing
+ The candidate will need to team with other developers, analysts, and experimentalists
+ Candidates who are both willing to develop expertise in different areas of electromagnetics and who work well in team environments are desired

Required:

+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment in electrical engineering, optical engineering or science, physics or closely\-related discipline, with a specialization in electromagnetic theory or simulation\.
+ Strong mathematical and simulation background with good knowledge and experience in electromagnetic analysis\.
+ Experience in design and simulation of novel optical structures and materials \(e\.g\. metamaterial lenses, angular momentum, phase gradient metasurfaces, etc\.\) with commercial and custom codes
+ Publications or presentations demonstrating experience with developing or using numerical simulations to better understand electromagnetic phenomenon\.
+ Experience in developing or using commercial software for device performance simulations
+ Experience in data analysis and post\-processing
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE L clearance

Desired:

+ Minimum GPA of 3\.2/4\.0 in undergraduate programs and 3\.5/4\.0 in graduate programs
+ Self\-motivated, with strong communication skills to work independently and in a team environment
+ Demonstrated ability to work with others and contribute to a team effort
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Willingness to develop expertise in different areas electromagnetics
+ Willingness to be flexible in job assignments

The Electromagnetic Theory department \(1352\) is engaged in development of advanced theory, modeling, simulation and analysis techniques for use across a broad spectrum of electromagnetic and plasma\-physics environments\. Capabilities developed in the Electromagnetic Theory department support long\-term research in electromagnetics, plasma physics, pulsed\-power sciences, and also enable the near\-term delivery of toolsets and high\-fidelity analysis that can be used for addressing the wide array of SNL mission needs\.
