Job Description


We are seeking an R&D Engineer to support product realization activities for the power source production department at the external vendor in Joplin Missouri\. This individual will join a high performing technical team in the design, development, qualification, and production of highly specialized components for national security applications\. These components must be designed and produced to meet demanding performance specifications, offer extremely high reliability, enable integration and interfacing to complex systems, and meet stringent reliability requirements in adverse environments\. The successful candidate will support the Product Realization Team \(PRT\) at the vendor\. On site tasks may include, but nor be limited to:

99. Implementing production acceptance requirements/criteria
99. Negotiating product specification requirements
99. Writing and reviewing work instructions
99. Assisting in resolution of technical problems
99. Reviewing contract requirements
99. Delivering product to the next level of assembly on time and budget
99. Travel for business is required\.


99. Bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering or relevant science, technology, engineering and mathematics \(STEM\) disciplines plus five or more years’ experience; or bachelor's and doctorate in relevant STEM discipline plus three or more years’ experience
99. Experience with implementing project management principles and tools
99. Experience interpreting mechanical and assembly drawings and tracking product requirements
99. Able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance\.


99. Proven ability to work with technologists, staff members, and support personnel
99. Effective communication skills for giving presentations, preparing reports, and explaining technical aspects of the work to a variety of audiences
99. Understand configuration management and change control
99. Knowledge of thermal battery or power source characteristics and fabrication methods
99. Experience with component design, development, or production
99. Experience with hazardous materials and work authorizations
99. Experience with process development
99. Knowledge of lean six sigma tools and approaches – green or black belt preferred

Department Description:

The Power Source Components Department has two major tasks\. The first is the production of batteries for the Concurrent Design and Manufacturing program for which our engineers oversee the production of thermal, silver zinc, and other batteries at selected vendors in the U\.S\. These batteries must meet stringent quality control requirements as well as rigorous test requirements in order to be shipped for use on DP programs\. Our second task includes the design, development, assembly and maintenance of various testers for the Power Source Technology Group's components and other products\. We carry out tests not only for our DP customer but also for WFO and other customers as well\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.

This Limited Term Employee \(LTE\) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years\.
