Job Description

:

We are seeking an Intern \- Materials Science R&D Undergraduate Summer\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Prepare and characterize plastic scintillator samples\.
+ Design and synthesize small\-molecule scintillators\.
+ Assess plastic scintillator aging properties\.

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position\.

**Additional Requirements**

+ Completed two semesters of general chemistry\.
+ Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in materials science, physics, chemistry, or related field\.
+ Demonstrated ability to develop and present ideas and results in oral and written form\.

Desired:

+ Two semesters of organic chemistry completed\.
+ Additional experience with organic synthesis and chemical characterization equipment\.
+ Experience with Microsoft Office\.
+ Strong oral and written communication skills; a basic understanding of mechanics, physics, and chemistry; and the ability to analyze data critically

Department Description:

The Radiation Effects and Detection Department applies radiation physics and chemistry to solve a variety of national security problems\. Typical projects include: synthesis, characterization, and modeling of novel scintillators that operate via new physical mechanisms; materials science of semiconductor radiation detectors; modeling of radiation transport and radiation effects on materials and devices; radiography/nondestructive evaluation of complex devices and materials; developing novel system architectures and multiplatform analysis software to detect radiation sources; and developing components and systems for national security applications\. The department supports a number of government agencies and expects to grow with new customers\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
