Job Description

:

The Resilience and Regulatory Effects Department is looking for an Economist to team with current staff\. Our department consists of technical staff with degrees in varied scientific fields who excel in working in a team environment, are curious and eager to explore scientific fields outside of their educational training, and possess highly entrepreneurial mindset, proactively reaching out to define and execute work across Sandia and in support of external sponsors\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Team with current staff in conducting consequence analyses across a wide range of homeland security\-related scenarios \(largely man\-made and natural disasters\), conduct cost\-benefit analyses of public policies, and develop microeconomic models and other tools on an as\-needed basis;
+ Support several government sponsors, typically Department of Homeland Security and Department of Energy, in the areas of critical infrastructure modeling/simulation projects\. The output of our modeling and simulation efforts are used for analysis that supports policy and operations planning;
+ Utilize expertise and work experience in a combination of micro\-econometrics, energy economics, and disaster resilience as necessary\.
+ Work closely with experienced modelers, application creators, GIS and other database developers, and analysis teams in support of government organizations and in collaboration with academia and industry;
+ Engage with internal and external sponsors to understand needs, create requirements, conceptualize solutions, develop fast turnaround white papers, presentations and other communication materials as well as produce and communicate analysis results to diverse audiences\.

Required:

+ Bachelor’s degree in STEM \(e\.g\. Engineering, Science, Technology, Math/Operations, Research/Statistics, Economics, etc\.\)
+ Ph\.D\. in Economics;
+ Previous work experience in Economics or a related field;
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
+ Proficiency with one of the following: Matlab, R, SAS, or Stata;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L\-level security clearance\.

Desired:

+ Expertise and work experience in a combination of micro\-econometrics, energy economics, and disaster resilience;
+ Environmental, or natural resource economics;
+ Energy economics;
+ Economic impact analysis;
+ Disaster analysis and resilience;
+ Synthesizing large complex reports into high\-level briefings;
+ Experience using Regional Economic Models Inc\., IMPLAN, or other economics tools;
+ Experience in data analysis and results visualization;
+ Demonstrated ability to work well in diverse teams in support of diverse set of sponsors;
+ Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills;
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills for diverse audiences;
+ Demonstrated ability to independently define and develop innovative approaches and solutions to a diverse range of complex problems;
+ DOE Q\-level security clearance\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
