Job Description


We are seeking an Intern \- Data Scientist R&D Graduate Year Round

We seek student interns to conduct data analysis research\. The work of the Data Science and Cyber Analytics Department at Sandia/California combines research in applied mathematics, statistics, and computer science with expertise in national security\. Our work impacts a wide variety of applications in cyber defense, advanced data science, streaming analytics, real\-time monitoring, and other areas\. Our results are published in leading technical journals and conferences, and much of our software is freely available to the research community\. We are particularly looking for students pursuing degrees in fields related to data sciences, including numerical mathematics \(especially optimization and linear algebra\), statistics, network and graph algorithms, discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, and cyber defense\. Our interns will be involved in conducting innovative research, developing open\-source software, and communicating their research through written reports and oral presentations\.


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship
+ Other requirements include: \(1\) Actively pursuing an advanced degree \(M\.S\. or Ph\.D\.\) in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a related area \(2\) ability to work in a collaborative research environment; \(3\) evidence of relevant expertise in the form of class work, technical publications, presentations, software, and/or knowledge of applications; \(4\) software development competence in C\+\+, C, Java, Python, MATLAB, or a related language; and \(5\) strong written\- and oral\-communication skills\.


Expertise in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, data mining, graph analysis, linear algebra, applied statistics, optimization, computational combinatorics, discrete mathematics, cryptography, network protocols, intrusion detection systems, malware analysis; \(2\) high\-performance, distributed, or parallel computing experience using MPI, Hadoop, or related tools; \(3\) familiarity with SQL and noSQL databases; and \(4\) a background in solving practical problems in science and engineering that involve encounters with real\-world data\.

Department Description:

The Data Science & Cyber Analytics Department develops new techniques and tools in machine learning, data analysis, and numerical and discrete algorithms\. The department is especially focused on matrix and tensor methods, adversary\-aware analytics, at\-scale streaming and sampling methods, graph and network analysis, and game theory\. The department generates publications in leading technical journals and conferences as well as software that is freely available to the research community\. These techniques are largely focused on real\-world data with a particular focus on cyber applications\. Our efforts impact a wide range of domains ranging from national security applications to basic and applied research\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
